[edit] Plot synopsis
10-year-old Scott Sharp offers $5,000 to Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, to protect him from a monster that he claims is trying to kill him and his mother. At first reluctant to take the case, Harry learns that Scott is being targeted by a malicious skinwalker who has taken over the life of a recently-murdered teacher. After getting no help from Melissa, an agent of the High Council, Harry discovers that Scott is adopted, and that he has been followed by an entourage of rooks, crows and ravens his entire life. When Scott is kidnapped, Harry finds he has more in common with the missing boy than he might have thought, bringing back memories from Harry's own childhood that begin to take on new significance.
