The constituency covers a broad area of north-west Birmingham, adjacent to the borders with Sandwell and Walsall. Perry Barr itself is the location of a University of Central England campus. Much of the deprivation is concentrated on the Handsworth area. The constituency features a large social economic range from inner city Lozells to relatively wealthy Great Barr and the traditional working class suburb of Oscott.
