Boxing in Latin America

Many Latin American countries have a history of professional boxing. Boxing in many Latin American countries enjoys widespread popularity. Some of the more notable Latin American nations include Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Puerto Rico has produced many champions, including Wilfredo Gómez, Edwin Rosario, Juan Laporte and Héctor Camacho. Current fighters of note include WBO junior welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, and WBO strawweight champion Ivan Calderón.

Mexico has produced fighters such as Miguel Canto, Salvador Sánchez, Rubén Olivares, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Ricardo Lopez, and the man who many consider the greatest Mexican fighter of all time, Julio César Chávez.[citation needed]
