[edit] Responses of Germany and Japan to World War II crimes
I'd like to know why you think the following statement is a "'hoax' remark which did not make sense":
- ...It is often argued that German companies would not be viable in the American market (since the US has the largest Jewish population in the world) if Germany does not apologize and compensate for the past. On the other hand, with Japan having the world's second largest economy for many years, it could afford to be less remorsful to its economically weaker neighbours than Germany.

That part of the summary referred to a change later on in the article:
- Japanese textbooks have been criticized for downplaying the extent of Japan's war crimes, an act which a writer of Asahi Shimbun later revealed to be a hoax.
I removed the part you cited because it is not logical - both Japan and Germany became economically powerful some time after the war, and both developed strong economical and political ties to the USA. If there is a difference at all, it lies in Germany having land borders to many immediate neigbours while Japan is an island. But that has nothing to do with their relationship to the USA. --Brazzy 09:03, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
I agree with you that "both Japan and Germany became economically powerful some time after the war, and both developed strong economical and political ties to the USA." However, do you think ties would be just as strong with a country with the largest Jewish population in the world, if Germany, which committed a systematic extermination of Jews during the Third Reich, doesn't show any remorse for what happened? I doubt it. Many German companies who employed slave labour fear that American Jews will sue them over employing slave labour. This is one of the main motivation for Germany to show repentence. The difference between Germany and Japan is that Germany committed a crime towards the compatriots of a significant, powerful ethnic group in the USA (not to mention that many European Jews moved to the USA after the war).

True, but OTOH Japan attacked the USA directly at Pearl Harbour, and its extremely harsh treatment of American POWs (Bataan Death March) is still widely remembered. I don't see such a big difference in the potential for lasting resentment from the USA. The truth is that Realpolitik took over rather quickly and both former enemies were needed as allies in the Cold War, resentment be damned. In Germany as well, the prosecution of Nazi party members was cancelled and the formation of the Bundeswehr strongly encouraged by the USA, with no regard for the role of many leading officers in WWII. In politics, it matters very little what someone has done in the past when they can be useful allies in the present. --Brazzy 08:08, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
