Broadmead-Sunnymead

Broadmead-Sunnymead, two areas referred to as one, are in Saanich, British Columbia. They are upscale neighbourhoods located in East Saanich just northwest of Mount Douglas and south of Cordova Bay. Saanich has a population of about 102,000 and is a sprawling area composed of a number of distinct neighbourhoods. Broadmead and Sunnymead feature underground electrical and natural gas lines.

Broadmead is characterized by imaginative West Coast architecture. The plan for this upscale community was put into the works in the early 1970s. Broadmead was designed to inspire a feeling of West Coast dense forest and abundance of natural animal habitat. Many drives are laced with trademark wooden or log carved signs. The developers of Broadmead placed a considerable emphasis on preserving the natural environment and designed the luxury homes to fit in perfectly with their surroundings (unlike many newer developments in Victoria today). Today, the properties in this area are well maintained. In the midst of Broadmead's forests are found lovely, large, architecturally pleasing homes that are probably the finest examples of the west coast style of design to be found in Greater Victoria with plenty of glass, cedar and stone.

Sunnymead the smaller community located beside Broadmead, separated by only one street. Though close in proximity, this mid 1980s development is the opposite of its sister neighbourhood. Instead of living in a deep forest, the trees were cleared and the entire area seems to always be sunny. Sunnymead is built around a large circular drive with many cul-de-sacs tied on to the outside of the ring. Properties are no less than 10,000 square feet, houses are large and within the area is Sunnymead's 12 acre private McMinn Park.
