Ten Mile Point

Ten Mile Point is a very exclusive, expensive neighbourhood of the District of Saanich in Victoria, British Columbia, and is the most easterly point on Vancouver Island. Ten Mile Point was so named because it was ten nautical miles from what was at the time the Royal Navy Base (now CFB Esquimalt, the main Pacific Ocean base of the Canadian Navy). Ten Mile Point is a wooded peninsula that forms one side of Cadboro Bay, the home of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the mythical Cadborosaurus sea monster. Ten Mile Point has a rugged shoreline with many secluded coves and beaches.
One such cove is called "Smuggler's Cove" which was used during the prohibition years as a boat landing and launch for rum-runners traveling back and forth to the United States.
Ten Mile Point became a summer retreat with many cabins set on its shores. The area later developed into the present upscale residential area near the University of Victoria. Today, Ten Mile Point is one of the most desirable residential areas in Greater Victoria with many fine homes and estates.
Ten Mile Point is located well within the urban area of Victoria but maintains through zoning controls a rural, bucolic atmosphere with only two street lights and large estate-sized properties with quite a number one acre or larger. Current home prices range from seven-hundred thousand upwards to ten million dollars.
Two time NBA MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns and singer/songwriter Nelly Furtado both own homes in Ten Mile Point.
