[edit] District Profile
The 13th District, eastern neighbor of the 11th, contains portions of Silicon Valley in addition to the downtown portions of San Jose and the city of Gilroy. The district has significant numbers of both Asian and Hispanic residents. The entire district is in Santa Clara County.
All but approximately 42,000 people in the district live in Silicon Valley. The city of San Jose contributes over half of the district's population, and most of the rest live in Mountain View, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale.
Connected via a national park is Gilroy, at the southern edge of the county.
[edit] Politics
The 13th Senate District is a safe Democratic district. As of 2006, 48.5% of Registered Voters were registered Democrat while 22% were registered Republican. In 2004, Senator Alquist received 68.6% of the vote.
[edit] 2001 Redistricting
Though the district more than doubled in area, its population was relatively unchanged. The district in the 1990s also was centered on San Jose and the Mountain View-Santa Clara-Sunnyvale corridor. In 2001, some parts of the city of San Jose were moved to the 10th Senate District and replaced with Gilroy.
