[edit] Regional profile
Situated just north of the staunchly liberal Greater Toronto Area, Central Ontario is traditionally a conservative region, not unlike Eastern Ontario just to the east. While the Liberals held most or all of the seats when the right was divided (although the sole Ontario Reform MP in 1993 was elected in this region), the Conservatives stormed back with 7 of the 11 seats in 2004 (although one has shifted back to the Liberals when Belinda Stronach defected on May 17, 2005), and the four remaining Liberal seats were elected with substantially reduced margins. The Conservatives picked up four more seats in the 2006 election, leaving only Newmarket-Aurora to the Liberals. The Liberals were able to pick up that seat which was won by Stronach in 2004 as a Conservative.
