Capelle aan den IJssel (population: 65,605 in 2005) is a town and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covers an area of 15.42 km² of which 1.13 km² is water. It is situated on the eastern edge of Rotterdam, on the Hollandse IJssel river.
Capelle aan den IJssel's most famous resident is Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who has lived there since 1999.
The town has what is probably be the country's smallest museum, the Dief- en Duifhuis ("House of Thieves and Pidgeons"). Now a historical museum, it served as the prison for the castle of Capelle and is all that now remains of the 16th Century castle.
Near A16 Motorway is a large business park called 'Rivium'. Companies based in Rivium are Sodexho Nederland, Sodexho Prestige, Shell Nederland, local energy company Eneco and many more.

- The Caland Line starts at De Terp station, proceeds to Capelle Centrum station and Slotlaan station, then to Rotterdam, Schiedam and Spijkenisse.
- Connections with the main railway system are at Rotterdam Blaak station and at Schiedam Centrum station, and with a change of underground at Beurs underground station, at Rotterdam Centraal station. To and from the direction The Hague the fastest connection is usually with a change at Schiedam Centrum, for other directions it varies.
