The Caspian Sea Wolf (Canis lupus cubanensis) is a critically endangered subspecies of the gray wolf, and was once found throughout the area between the Caspian and Black seas. Now an extremely rare animal, it exists only in a remote area in the extreme southeastern portion of Russia that borders the Caspian Sea. Between the Caspian and Black Sea lies a region of lush forests covering the hillsides and coastal plain along the southern shores of the Caspian Sea. Climb up these hillsides and one can discover a jungle-like habitat of oak, beech, hornbeam, ash, English elm, and maple trees entangled with many climbers and low shrubs, and inhabited by an assortment of animals, including both red and roe deer.
