This user page is currently under construction, hence its hideous appearance. I'm using it as my own, personal little sandbox in order to learn more about the intricacies of the wiki-markup. It will be updated, improved, and refined until it's acceptable for public consumption. As you can tell, I have a fondness for userboxes: they are terse, easy to read, and pretty to look at. Unfortunately, they're also rather unwieldy and I'll be culling their numbers as I incorporate the relevant information into this page in a more appropriate fashion.
All userboxes located to the right, below my personal information, (with the inclusion of the Public Domain notice at the bottom of this page) provide information relevant to my contributions to Wikipedia, such as my choice of spelling style, general areas of knowledge and expertise, and Wikipedia group affiliations. All other userboxes located below offer more general and/or light hearted information about myself and my interests.
[edit] About myself
[edit] General
I consider myself a consummate geek. In 1991, after I had taught myself BASIC on my trusty Commodore 64 (a language I have since disowned, the learning of which I consider an embarrassing faux pas), I first connected to the Internet at a blinding 1200 baud. I believe I may be the first person from my city, if not my whole country, to have needlessly flamed someone on a BBS.
After taking that first evolutionary step and going "online" all those years ago, I have encountered a few things on the Internet which have no less than filled me with awe and excitement, some of which include: my first discovery of Usenet, my first game of NetHack, my first naive steps in using Unix and, of course, my first visit to Wikipedia.
[edit] Education
I'm currently a student at the University of South Africa with a double-major in philosophy and economics, and I am complementing my studies with the aid of MIT's fantastic OpenCourseWare initiative. My further interests and passions lie in computer programming, artificial intelligence and linguistics.
[edit] Charity
My favourite charity is Child's Play and I am presently campaigning to get the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town listed as a partnered hospital. The hospital is the largest of its kind in the country, and often receives patients from foreign and overseas countries into its specialized care. Unfortunately, government funding for the hospital was recently cut and it now survives primarily on donations, currently requiring approximately another R10 million to upgrade its fifty-year-old theatre complex to meet modern standards.
[edit] Wikipedia
I've been using Wikipedia for a few years now, but have only made minor contributions in the vein of spelling and grammar correction, and so forth. Since Wikipedia has proven itself to be a most invaluable resource to some of my recent academic work, I have decided to give back by stepping up my commitment to its gradual yet inexorable improvement by contributing more frequently and diligently.
[edit] Cricket
Cricket is my favourite sport and, as a member of WikiProject Cricket, I echo the project's sentiment that the number of cricket-related articles can always increase and be better organized. Sadly, many cricket-related articles on Wikipedia are of little more than mediocre quality, which is certainly not what such a sublime and sophisticated sport deserves.
It is my desire to see many more cricketing articles achieve Featured Article status and appear on the front page in order to potentially spread cricket's exposure to people who may otherwise have no knowledge of, or interest in it.
Cricket-related articles to which I'm currently committing a great deal of work include:
Planned future cricket-related projects include:
