The elections that took place in two rounds between June 2 and July 3, 1996 were the first in the history of Chad since independence. The elections were won by the incumbent President Idriss Déby, who easily defeated at the second round the former warlord Wadel Abdelkader Kamougué, with the support of Saleh Kebzabo. The elections were marred by widespread and credible reports of electoral fraud and government intimidation of opposition forces, confirmed by international observers.
