Chimchar (ヒコザル? Hikozaru in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the Pokémon media franchise.
Chimchar are famous for being one of the three species of Pokémon players can choose from at the beginning of their adventure in the Diamond and Pearl versions of the series. The purpose of Chimchar in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[1]
Chimchar was revealed on August 5, 2006, alongside the other Starter Pokémon of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: Turtwig, the Young Leaf Pokémon; and Piplup, the Penguin Pokémon.[2] The name Chimchar is a portmanteau of the English words chimpanzee and char, while the Japanese name Hikozaru may be a portmanteau of the Japanese words for fire (火 hi?), child (子 ko?) and monkey (猿 saru?). The pronunciation of zaru instead of saru is a phonetic shift that occurs when saru is used in a compound.
The English name Chimchar was first reported at the 2007 American International Toy Fair in New York City,[3] then officially confirmed in the April 2007 (Volume 214) issue of Nintendo Power.[4]

Biological characteristics
Chimchar are based on chimpanzees. Being very agile, Chimchar are able to climb the rocky ledges of tall mountains, where they live. The flames on their backs are produced by burning gas in their stomachs. The flames do not go out in the rain, and, unlike the tail flames of Charmander, those of Chimchar go out when they go to sleep.
In the video games
Chimchar is the Fire-type Starter Pokémon choice in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS, similar to Charmander, Cyndaquil and Torchic from the earlier games.
Chimchar evolves into Monferno at level 14.[5]
In the anime
On one of the very first episodes of the Sinnoh Season of Pokémon, a Chimchar was featured with Piplup and Turtwig, as a starter Pokémon up for beginning trainers. This Chimchar was naughty and proved it by stealing Piplup's food while the Pokémon were eating. The two got in a fight and escaped. Dawn found the two and kept Piplup.
Later on, Ash Ketchum becomes rivals with a trainer named Paul, who owns a Chimchar. Paul often comments on Chimchar's lack of power, yet continues to keep the Pokémon with him.
In the manga
In Pokémon Special, Pearl chooses a Chimchar as his starter from Berlitz.
