Jared Samuel Sunshine was born in 1981 in Santa Monica, California to Carl Allen Sunshine and Tove Skjelborg Sunshine, and has two younger brothers, Aaron and Nathan. He resided in Culver City, California until the age of six, at which time his family moved to West Los Angeles, California. He attended the Pressman Academy for grades four through six, and eight; Walter Reid Junior High for grade seven; and the Shalhevet High School for grades nine through twelve.

He then moved to New York City, New York to attend Columbia College at Columbia University. There he was vice president for public relations of the campus chapter of the ACLU, and college representative to the President's Committee for Campus Security. He pledged the Alpha Chapter of the Zeta Psi Fraternity in 2001, and served as its vice president in 2002; he was also inducted into the Order of Omega greek honors society and served as its vice president for membership in 2002. He graduated in May 2004 being granted bachelor's degree in both Psychology and Political Science.

He matriculated at the Fordham University School of Law in 2005 and expects to graduate with a doctorate in law in 2008. He presently lives on the Upper West Side in the neighborhood of Manhattan Valley, by Central Park West.

He has worked at the The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California in both military (Air Force) and civilian roles; and at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC.

At present, he maintains two active blogs. “We live in borrowed sunshine” comprises novelettes narrating the more interesting episodes of his life, and “Chasing the Dragon” comprises shorter and more pithy stories and anecdotes.
