The origin of the title "Banner" County is also said to have come from Lord Clare's Dragoons' banner. can anyone expand on this adn clarify things? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the banner was returned to the county after his death and eneded up in Galway? Ciaranc 13:40, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
googled this::"At Ramillies, the Clare regiment captured a banner from the opposing English forces, the only French unit to do so that day. This captured banner was presented to the Benedictine nuns in Ypres and was subsequently brought back to Ireland by nuns when they were forced to evacuate their convent due to the ravages of the First World War. They established themselves at Kylemore Abbey, County Galway, where the original banner presented by the Claremen is now kept. The capture of this banner by the Clare Dragoons is said to have given rise to the term “the Banner County”."Ciaranc 13:57, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] The centre of traditional Irish music?
The following sentence seemed to violate the nPOV requirement:
County Clare contains The Burren, a unique karst landscape area of limestone hills and fields, Bunratty Castle, and is considered to be the centre of traditional Irish music today.
Views would presumably differ on where the center of Irish music might lie, if anywhere. I've changed "the centre" to "a major centre", but the "is considered to be" part still bugs me a bit. Who considers it to be so? Can anyone think of a way of conveying the thought without using this phrase? Eloil
Christy Moore seems to think so, "Flutes and fiddles everywhere. If it's music you want, You should go to Clare."
Doolin, in County Clare, and specifically O'Connor's Pub on Fisher Street is regarded as "The Home of Irish Folk Music". That's what the sign says outside the door. I think it is regarded that the tradition of people playing trad. irish folk songs in pubs started here. MeanStreets ("...Chorizo..." 15:23, 30 March 2007 (UTC))

- The Russell Brothers in the 1960s played here. Many books and websites refer to Doolin as the "...capital of Irish Folk" or the "... birthplace of modern folk". In Ireland "local" music would be played in pubs across the counties. As far as I am aware O'Connor's became a place people would travel to play and thus the folk "movement" in Ireland was born. Folk Music became less county dependant and a new hybrid/more modern style was born. Obv. this needs references! But I spent 8 weeks in Doolin in 2005 and this is what *drunk* Irish musicians and people told me! MeanStreets "...Chorizo..." 14:36, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

- As a Clareman, I may be biased, but I do agree that Clare is almost universally regarded as the home of Irish music. I think, though, that something like "is one of the leading heartlands of Irish music today" would satisfy the NPOV issue. On the question of music in pubs, up until the 1960's and 1970's, it wasn't the done thing - if you wanted to drink, you went to the pub, if you wanted to dance or listen to music, you went to a ceilidh - typically held in a community hall, someone's house or, in fine weather, at a local crossroads. As for which pub was the first - I honestly wouldn't have a clue... Gabhala 21:09, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

A slight annomoly; according to Wikipedia's Shackleton page he born at
"Kilkea House, County Kildare, Ireland"
and not County Clare. Which is it?
I thought Shackleton was from Kerry.
Also does John Holland get no love?
