Crash Team Racing (クラッシュ バンディクー レーシング Kurasshu Bandikū Rēshingu?, Crash Bandicoot Racing) is a racing game for the PlayStation, made by Naughty Dog. It was released in 1999. This was the last Crash game made by Naughty Dog. After this game, they left Universal Interactive Studios (now Vivendi Games) and became an in-house developer for SCEA.

[edit] Gameplay

Gameplay is similar to that of Mario Kart; the following are gameplay elements original to CTR. Collecting ten wumpa fruit improves any item used. The game has a special "power slide" move that gives the player a speed boost while turning. It should be noted that in the last Jak and Daxter game from Naughty Dog: Jak X: Combat Racing also has a "power slide" which gives you an extra speedboost.

In the races, boxes contain weapons or other powerups that give the player an advantage. Green and black arrows on the ground (turbo boosters) will give the player a short speed increase. Most of the courses contain obstacles that cause a loss of speed, and must be avoided.

As in Mario Kart, CTR has a battle mode, in which players attack each other in one of several special battle arenas, some of which are unlockable.

Collectible items include trophies, crystals, gems, and relics. A number of secret characters can be activated throughout the course of the game.

[edit] Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Prologue

Crash and his friends are preparing to enter a kart racing tournament. Unfortunately, an extraterrestrial named Nitros Oxide sees this, and travels to Earth to compete. He claims to be the fastest racer in the Galaxy, who travels the stars looking for creatures to test his skill. He then challenges Earth to a "little game" he calls "Survival of the Fastest", and explains the rules: Oxide races against the best racer on Earth. If Earth's driver wins, Oxide will leave Earth alone. But if Oxide wins, he'll turn the entire globe into a concrete parking lot, and make Earth's inhabitants his slaves. The drivers of Earth prepare to race for the fate of their planet.

[edit] Playable Characters

[edit] Default characters

Crash Bandicoot

  • The star of the Crash series. A good all-round character.

Doctor Neo Cortex

  • The villain of the Crash series. Another good all-round character.

Tiny Tiger

  • A huge Thylacine. His weight gives him high speed but bad turning.

Coco Bandicoot

  • Crash's brainy sister. Special computer chips give her kart excellent acceleration.

Doctor N. Gin

  • Cortex's missile-headed assistant. His brilliant engineering and sometimes effeminate has made his kart accelerate better.

Dingodile

  • A flamethrower wielding dingo/crocodile hybrid. As a result of pumping his kart with the same gasoline used for his flamethrower, he has high speed but bad turning.

Polar

  • A small cutesy polar bear cub. His small weight enables his kart to turn well but go very slow.

Pura

  • A small cutesy tiger cub. His small weight enables his kart to turn well but go very slow.

[edit] Unlockable characters

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ripper Roo

  • The first boss in adventure mode. A deranged blue kangaroo. Has unlimited TNT crates.

Papu Papu

  • The second boss in adventure mode. An incredibly obese tribesman. Has unlimited beakers.

Komodo Joe

  • The third boss in adventure mode. A samurai Komodo Dragon and the smarter of the Komodo Bros. Has unlimited TNT and Nitro crates. The TNTs are thrown and explode on impact to the ground. The Nitros are regular.

Pinstripe Potoroo

  • The fourth boss in adventure mode. A gangster potoroo with a tommy gun. Has unlimited bowling bombs.

Fake Crash

  • A "fake" version of Crash, with huge eyebrows and goofy teeth. Originated from a goofy doll found by Naughty Dog.

Doctor Nefarious Tropy

  • An evil time-traveler and master of time and space.

Penta Penguin

  • A tiny cutesy penguin that is thought by many to be the one that was attacked by Dingodile in Crash Bandicoot: Warped. His stats vary depending on region.

[edit] Non-Playable characters

Nitros Oxide

  • The main villain of the story and the final boss. He is an extraterrestrial who claims to be the fastest racer in the galaxy. He has a number of unlimited weapons as his disposal. N. Oxide cannot be unlocked without a gameshark, even if a player beats his ghost on every track in Time Trial mode (which earns you the scrapbook).

Trophy Girls

  • These bandicoot women appear at the end of each race to hand out the trophy to the winner of the race. Ami is the green haired one, Isabella is the blonde girl, Megumi is the blue haired girl, and Liz is the black haired girl. A different girl appears to award the trophie to different characters.

[edit] Reception

The game was praised by critics and fans for its numerous tracks and options, and is considered by both to be one of the best games in the Crash series and the single player game is sometimes regarded as better than that any of the Mario Kart games.
