[edit] Highway Cost
This article states that the most expensive mile of freeway constructed was part of the X bronx expressway. does this remain true after the completion of the "big dig"?

On www.nycroads.com/cross-bronx, Steve Anderson mentions that there were proposals to add a second deck to the expressway in the open trenched sections. The upper level would carry truck priority lanes. -JGCarter
[edit] Weird Edit Removed
I removed some strange edit that was put up yesterday. You can check the diff yourself, but it was poorly written, contained lots of typos and some incomprehensible abbreviations, and alluded to the danger to the expressway's bridges from a terrorist attack. I have no idea, but the person who edited it has no profile and has made only the one edit.
Btw, I think "necessary evil" is appropriate. The CBE is the only way of getting from Northern New Jersey to Long Island, by truck/bus/other commercial vehicle, that is. Otherwise, you'd have to go down to Staten Island, take the Verrazano, then the BQE up to the LIE (or god help you, go through Manhattan in some fashion). God damn Moses for building all of the bridges over the parkways only tall enough for cars, and god damn him for tearing up neighborhoods to do so (oh, and not putting a train line along the LIE, or putting a subway under the Van Wyck, and ruining the waterfronts on both the Hudson and the East River). [edit] Necessary evil? NPOV?
I have a problem with calling this "necessary" and "evil." First of all, the necessity of the road is dubious. Anyone who has read The Power Broker knows of popular opinion that any road deemed "necessary" just creates necessity someplace else for another road, which brings into question the discrete necessity for any one road. Furthermore, this road in this place was far from necessary.
"Evil" is not NPOV, even in this colloquial figure of speech sense. Franklin Bynum 19:23, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

- Normally I would agree about the 'necessary evil' part, but in this case it's as fitting as springtime snowmelt..and several million New Yorkers, Jersey People and countless truckers would agree. -PhPh

- Can someone get a citation on, "It is not unusual to hear news stories of carjackings and robberies along this notorious stretch of roadway." That sounds a little uh, made-up.
