Legislative elections were held in Cyprus on 27 May, 2001. The communist Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) won the most seats, but failed to win a parliamentary majority. The Democratic Rally, party of president Glafkos Klerides, came second.
AKEL's General Secretary Dimitris Christofias was elected House President.
