Cyprus made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981. The best position of Cyprus in this contest was the 5th position, achieved at three occations: In 1982 with Anna Vissi, 1997 with Chara & Andreas Constantinou, and 2004 with Lisa Andreas. The Cypriot entries were so far always in Greek or English (with the 2007 entry beeing entirely sung in French) Although Turkish is one of the official languages of the country, no Turkish lyrics have ever made it into a Cypriot Eurovision entry.

Cyprus is famous for always giving 12pts to Greece in the Semi Final and Final. Greece is also well known for reciprocating. In 2003, Cyprus and Turkey made history by exchanging votes for the first time, despite issues of recognition.

[edit] Issues With Turkey

It should be noted that Cyprus, which since 1974 has been divided into the internationally-recognized Republic of Cyprus, and the de facto unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, is always represented by the former. While Turkey, another participant, does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, the two countries have of late exchanged votes and in 2004 Lisa Andreas represented the Republic within Turkey itself.
