Daily Athenaeum
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Daily Athenaeum is the student run newspaper of West Virginia University. It is printed daily and is circulated every morning. Starting as a literary magazine in 1887, the Daily Athenaeum, known as the DA on campus, has grown over the years from a weekly magazine into a daily newspaper. The DA began to gain popularity in the 1920s when the newly formed journalism school took over production of the newspaper. In 1970, the paper split from the school of journalism and became an independent campus entity. Though it is still governed by the Student Publications Board, which the School of Journalism has a significant role in.
The Daily Athenaeum is currently housed in its own building on the downtown campus of West Virginia University on Prospect Street. The building was constructed in 1994 and paid for using student fees.
According to the DA website, 87% of the newspaper's revenue comes from the sale of classified and display advertisements, with 13% coming from a student subscription fee.
The DA was voted as the Princeton Review's 10th best college newspaper in the United States in 2005 and 15th in 2006.
The Daily Athenaeum motto is: Little good is accomplished without controversy, and no civic evil is ever defeated without publicity.
