[edit] Playing career
Huish (pronounced "hush") has been the club professional and course manager at North Berwick West Links for over 30 years. After turning pro in 1959 he was known as a competent tournament player until 1975 when, after qualifying for The Open Championship in a seven-way playoff, he shot rounds of 67 and 69 to lead Tom Watson, Peter Oosterhuis and Bernard Gallacher by two strokes, with Jack Nicklaus and others even further behind. Although Huish fell away over the weekend and ultimately finished 13 shots off the pace, the achievement brought him into the public eye. In the same year he also won the British Professional Club Championship and while he never won an elite tournament he won many lower-ranked competitions, particularly on the Tartan Tour.
He has won 5 titles on the European Seniors Tour, the most recent coming in 2001 when he won in a play-off at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open in Switzerland.
[edit] Later career
He has since become a very significant and respected figure on the inside of professional golf, serving as the PGA Captain, a PGA Board Member and Ryder Cup Committee Member. Huish has held the latter position longer than anyone else. In recognition of his achievements Huish received the Special Award at the Seniors Tour annual awards dinner in 2004 for Services to Golf.
Huish married his second wife Diane in 1989 with whom he had a son, Oliver, in 1990. He also has two children from a previous marriage, Susan (b.1967) and Martyn (1969). Martyn is his assistant and also a PGA professional. Huish enjoys gardening and is still actively involved in all golf affairs in North Berwick, especially at the David Huish Pro Shop.
