Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z: Ora no Gohan o Kaese!! (ドラゴンボールゼット オラの悟飯を返せッ!! Doragon Bōru Zetto Ora no Gohan o Kaese!!?, lit. "Dragon Ball Z: Return my Gohan!!") and originally simply titled Dragon Ball Z, is the first movie in the Dragon Ball Z franchise. (It was preceded by three Dragon Ball movies.) It was originally released in Japan on July 15, 1989, between episodes 11 and 12. It was translated in America by FUNimation's and Bridge Entertainment's title is The Pursuit of Garlic.
The movie was originally released in America on VHS and DVD in 1997. The English dub was a joint venture between Pioneer (now Geneon) Entertainment and FUNimation Entertainment. The dub used the Ocean Group (who also did the voices for the first two seasons of DBZ) and it featured dialogue accurate to the Japanese version and had the original Japanese background music. In 2005, the film was re-released as part of FUNimation's Ultimate Uncut Editions due to Geneon losing the distribution rights for seasons 1 and 2 of DBZ and the first three DBZ movies. The new dub featured FUNimation's voice actors and a new soundtrack replacing the original japanese soundtrack. In addition, the clips from DBZ episodes 1 and 9 featured on the Pioneer release were cut from the Funimation re-release, though a commentary is now presented with the dub voice of Garlic Jr., Chuck Huber, and Chris Cason; the ADR Director.
This movie, along with The World's Strongest and The Tree of Might, was released in a DVD box set labeled "First Strike" from FUNimation on November 14, 2006.

[edit] Plot
The movie begins with Piccolo being attacked and supposedly killed by a group of shadowed fighters. The movie then cuts to Goku's wife Chi-Chi along with her father, Ox King, and Goku's son, Gohan being attacked by an unknown group of fighters. Goku is out fishing during the attack and after sensing danger, he returns only to find his son had been kidnapped. The group responsible for the attack are Garlic Jr.'s henchmen, and it is later revealed that they were not so much holding Gohan ransom for any reason, but because they were after the four-star Dragon Ball that was attached to his hat. After retrieving the remaining Dragon Balls, Garlic Jr. summons Shenron and he immediately wishes for immortality. Shenron never having to grant this type of demand before, grants Garlic Jr. his wish. A furious Goku appears to try and take back his son, but soon discovers Garlic Jr.'s new power. Kami meets up with Goku, and describes a brief history of Garlic Jr. and his father Garlic, to Goku. Goku then proceeds to try to find Gohan when he is attacked by the villain's gang.
After brief fighting, Goku's loyal friend Krillin and his past arch-rival Piccolo appear and fight against Garlic Jr.'s Ginger, Nicky, and Sansho. And with Garlic Jr.'s newly obtained immortality and a new muscular second form, it seems not even Earth's warriors can take him down. Confident Garlic Jr. unleashes his ultimate attack, and bursting with anger, he opens up a portal known as the "Dead Zone" (hence the name of the film). Intending to suck his enemies into the void, Garlic Jr. becomes frustrated with Goku's ability to avoid the Dead Zone, and he decides to handle Goku himself, and later force him into the Dead Zone. Things looking extremely difficult for Earth's hero, Goku's son, Gohan, becomes enraged witnessing his father and friends in danger and releases his latent energy, blasting Garlic Jr. into his own vortex to be trapped for an eternity. Remarkably, in the end of it all, Gohan doesn't remember a thing of what happened, and with amazement, Goku figures his son is no ordinary boy, but one with supreme unmatchable power.
