Dhoper chop
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dhoper chop is a Kolkata speciality snack dish, believed to have been initially prepared in the canteens of Jadavpur University. "Chop" in Bengali cuisine refers to a breaded fry or batter fry, and does not convey the conventional culinary meaning of meat chop. "Dhop" is believed to have initially been a nonsense rhyming word to go with chop. "-er" is a possessive marker in the Bengali language.
A dhoper chop is actually a batter fry (and not a breaded fry) of a vegetable sandwich. The vegetable preparation in question is usually mocha (a prepared form of the banana flower). The dish is usually served with a sweet sauce on the side, like Papaya chutney.
"Dhoper chop" is also a Bengali colloquialism which means "stuff and nonsense". A shortened form with the nonsense word - "dhop" now also means "nonsense" and may also be used in the sense of "fib". The usage possibly came from disgruntled dhoper chop eaters who found scanty vegetable stuffing inside a large fluffy fry.
