Division of Makin

The Division of Makin is an electoral division for the Australian House of Representatives located in the northeastern suburbs of Adelaide. Established in 1984 and named after Norman Makin, a former MP and diplomat, it has been a marginal seat at most elections since. It includes the suburbs of Tea Tree Gully, Modbury, Salisbury Heights and Para Hills.
It is known as a mortgage belt seat, with a large proportion of the population in the area paying off home loans. It was won by Draper at the 1996 election when the Howard Liberal government was elected with a two party preferred margin of 4.8 percent, which was reduced to 4.6 percent at the 1998 election,[1] then 3.8 percent at the 2001 election, then by only 0.9 percent at the 2004 election.[2] Draper has announced her retirement at the 2007 federal election.[3]
