[edit] Oradour
Dennis, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated having your photos of Oradour Sur Glan available recently. After having been there, during this past Spring, sans camera, I was having some difficulty in adequately describing the true nature of the place, and the related events, to friends who were interested in the case of Oradour. Your photos were a great help. Thank you. Bill Keith Lufkin, Texas
- Thank you, Bill. I'm glad to hear your appreciation! Regards, --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 18:43, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Picture
Cam you check Image:WW2 TitlePicture For Wikipedia Article.jpg?
Image:Arbeit macht frei.png isn't Public Domain, so I think the complet picture can't be Public Domain when one of the parts isn't Public Domain.
And for Image:Red army soldiers raising the soviet flag on the roof of the reichstag berlin germany.jpg exist a Deletion requests.
-- MichaelFrey 12:45, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up, Michael!
- Image:Red army soldiers raising the soviet flag on the roof of the reichstag berlin germany.jpg seems to be public domain, or close enough, see:
Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Red army soldiers raising the soviet flag on the roof of the reichstag berlin germany.jpg - I've changed the licence for the montage to cc-2 (Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License), so the issue regarding Image:Arbeit macht frei.png does not apply anymore. The original was cc-2 and the derived work is now also cc-2.
Generally, I think we should keep the montage as it is, with its new license as cc-2. I think it is highly unlikely that there should be any problems (but I'm no expert on copyright stuff). Rather than deleting this montage image, it is better that I make changes to it, if problems, however unlikely, arise.

[edit] ventilation system
I'm a novelist, interested in knowing more about the ventilation system of the bunkers - doing research on Albert Speer for a possible novel. He supposedly planned to assassinate Hitler with poison gas introduced into the main ventilation shaft, originally at ground level, but found a chimney had been built four metres high around it. There's some confusion/questionability to the story, and I'm trying to form a visualized picture. Thanks for any information or advice, Lee Wood (author of 'Looking for the Mahdi' and 'Kingdom of Lies', if you want to google me for any reason.) email: robinsoncat-AT-hotmail.co.uk
- Thanks for your message! I have sent you an email regarding this issue. My regards, --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 20:45, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Attempts to manipulate "real" history
hi, rather than delete this picture it should be at the top "the key picture", as this represents the end of the Nazi, for which some 30,000,000 + Russiand died, taking thev full brunt of the Nazi war machine and destroying it, it represents the Victory of Mother Russia and the women of the USSR as well as the men of the Glorious Red Army who smashed the German Terrorists and this picture tells that story the Nazi beast is dead burned in the ruins of Berlin rather than face the just rath of the people of the FREE world. While D-day as Churchill said at the time represented "the step back into Europe" and the "Step over Hitlers wall", a major milestone on the way but not an end in itself. and as a footnote, It is not the vetrens of the USSR who spend their time wailing and lamenting their great loss or their hurts, but the current bunch of Neo-Nazies - the Isralie, who should no better than what they are up to in the Mid-East. When the Yanks retire from or are beaten out of that region we can expect serious setteling of old scores that a few nukes will not stop. Isreal has learned nothing neither have their co-religious around the world. [they lost maybe 10,000,000 or less than 25% of the USSR losses so why the perpetual wailing and the Germans based on personal experiance - Kassel - are no better]. Please move this picture to Key location. I suggest other pictures for your mountage. Rotterdam after the 1940 bombing by the Nazis is a key picture. best of luck with your attempts - you can never please everyone! -User:159.134.233.122
- Hi, unknown! Not sure I get it, but I think you mean you'd like to see the Soviet flag over the Reichstag as the top picture. Actually, before I completed the design of the montage, I found that in my opinion the very best pic to symbolize the war would be the Soviet Reichstag flag - it is simply a great photograph! But there are some problems: the design works much better with the D-day pic at the top (it is wider than the Soviet flag pic). Furthermore, most people recognize the importance of D-day much more than the importance of the Eastern Front. Personally I think this is a little sad, considering the immense sacrifice of the Soviet Union. My regards, --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 21:47, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] yugoslavia problem
Can you please try to analyze the Yugoslavian casualties, because there is a 7 different nationalities in the Yugoslavia. - User:88.218.42.223
- Hi, unknown! I am not sure I understand you. Do you mean the piechart with casualties? Well, if you do, then: If we split Yugoslavia into the different nationalities then the Yugoslavia casualties will fall into "Others", and then Yugoslavia won't be named in the piechart, which would be a little unfair considering the sacrifice. By the way, the same thing applies to the Soviet Union, but I don't think anyone would like too see a general piechart with all the different Soviet states individually listed... [edit] inclusion of Honey bee in WPCD - might need to shift to Western honey bee
Hi. Just thought someone on the WPCD team ought to know; the Honey bee article was flagged as WPCD material, but has been restructured; the article is intended as a general article (I give mouse as a perfect parallel example article), but had been essentially overrun by content that was only appropriate for the Western honey bee article. The content that was earmarked for inclusion in WPCD has, accordingly, been moved to the latter article. There are 7 species of honey bees, and the Honey bee article is for the group as a whole, not just for the one well-known species (Apis mellifera"). This content shift is in keeping with the goals of both Wikiproject Arthropods and Wikiproject Beekeeping, and expect it will be kept this way in the future. It's unfortunate that the article was left the way it was for as long as it was, because a lot of links were made to that page that REALLY should be directing people elsewhere. It's going to take a while to get that straightened out. Dyanega 21:40, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Allied invasion of Italy
Hi Dennis. In your recent edits of the above article in the 'Further Allied Advances' para you have implied that the defensive lines from the Volturno Line northwards were all part of the Winter Line. Now in the various literature there is a fair confusion as to what the Winter line was. Sometimes it is used as an alternative name for the Gustav Line, sometimes for the greater Gustav defenses including the Reinhardt and Adolf Hitler lines (currently the definition implied in the Wikipedia article on the Winter Line), sometimes it is all of these plus the Caesar line just south of Rome and its subsidiary Rome switch line!! However, I've never seen a reference which includes the lines south of these (ie the Volturno and Barbara lines). I've tended to assume the second option. If you can point me to a clarification of this I would be deleriously happy!! Otherwise I would propose to modify your edit to reflect the separateness of the Volturno and Barbara identities. [edit] Oradour-sur-Glane
Dear Dennis,
My name is Steve Kemp. I am a freelance photographer and film cameraman living in London, England. I am just writing to let you know that I was very impressed by your photograph of Oradour-sur-Glane.
Were you just visiting, or do you have a family connection to the place?
Regards,
Steve Kemp, User:86.138.1.214
- Dear Steve, thanks for your message! I am very glad you appreciated the
- photo(s) of Oradour-sur-Glane. No, I have no family connection to the place - I was just visiting. I heard about the place by pure coincidence just a couple of days before I would travel to France and participate in the 60th anniversary of D-day. When I heard about Oradour, I immediately decided it was a place I had to try to visit as well. The town is a little "off-the-beaten-track", i.e. not in any usual tourist region, but I am glad I visited it since the place had a significant impact on me. [edit] Battle of San Pietro Infine
Hello and thanks for the suggestion about the war box and campaign box. I did notice the convention, by the way, and it seems less logical than My Way (nice song!). It seems to me that the most general item should be first and then progress down to the more specific item; that is, Italian campaign at the top, specific battle beneath it. I'm not that passionate about it, though, one way or the other, so I'll change it to fit the convention sooner or later. I have to find some more information. Thanks for the comment. Happy New Year from Naples! Jeffmatt 07:39, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Reasons for WW1
hi

pls help thks a bunch

- Wow, such a short question deserves a short answer... Reasons for WWI: Imperialism, expansionism, arms racing, settling old disputes, complicated alliances, and, of course, the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. So, as you may understand, the reasons are quite complicated (in my opinion more complicated than it was for WW2), so for more and better information check out the article Causes of World War I. Hi! One of the images that you have used in your montage has been deleted. I marked the montage with a template that will give you 7 to 14 days to replace the image with another one. When you have replaced the image, feel free to remove the "No source since" template. Regards. Samulili 11:50, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Asia/Pacific images in WW2 montage
While I admire your great work with the montages, I have to say that I don't think five of the six images and approximately 16% of it in area should be from Europe. It was a truly global struggle. The Pacific War was fought by roughly one third of the total number of people involved in the war (see World War II casualties) and was much bigger in terms of area than the Euopean conflict, stretching from Mongolia to Alaska to Australia. Can I suggest that "Image:1anschluss.gif" is replaced, possibly by one relating to the China-Japan conflict? For example, the image on the right also connects to the unique atrocities committed in Nanjing as well. Thanks.
Grant | Talk 05:43, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your opinion, Grant65! You are not the only one who have commented on the theatre aspect of the montage. The choice of pictures are really the result of a quite long discussion: Talk:World_War_II/Archive_6#The_Picture. The emphasis was to primarily illustrate different aspects of the war (e.g. fighting, politics, civilian impact) rather than the various theaters. We did not want the montage to be too "warcrufty", i.e. we wanted to appeal also to those who weren't particularly interested in WWII. There was a version with the "Iwo Jima flag-rising" but people objected to having TWO flags in the montage. Furthermore, it proved very difficult to find an appropriate image for the Pacific theatre, that is, an image people recognize and/or can distinguish what it is. I am afraid I think the picture you suggest does not help the "Pacific issue" very much, as it isn't obvious to the casual viewer that it is from that theatre. Personally I think a picture from Pearl Harbor (haven't found a good one yet, they are all messy) or the Iwo Jima flag-rising (but two flag-risings???) would be best to cover the Pacific theatre. But however we address it, there will always be a problem of what is being left out. If we care about theatres and try to balance it with adding a Pacific image, we automatically have the problem with other left-out theatres (Africa, Atlantic, Mediterranean and the Eastern Front in Russia etc). Furthermore, if we add one more image, we have to remove another image and thus remove an important aspect which the montage tries to illustrate.
My reasons for the current selection of images (to view the image, click Commons:Image:WW2 TitlePicture For Wikipedia Article.jpg):
- D-day: Very known & very important multi-national battle. The beginning of the end of the Nazi rule.
- Nazis marching: Easily recognizable & very important aspect, since they were the supreme main reason the war started. It also symbolizes the psychological factors and the indoctrinations of the totalitarian regimes.
- Death camp: Easily recognizable & important aspect describing one of the greatest civilian impacts.
- Atom bomb: Easily recognizable & very important aspect describing the huge development in weapon technology and the start of the Cold War. It also marks the end of the war in the Pacific.
- Soviet flag in Berlin: Easily recognizable & marks the huge Soviet effort and the end of the war in Europe. It is also a marker of the start of the Soviet influence in East Europe.
As you understand, my intention was to illustrate different aspects of the war, not necessarily warfare, theatres and nations. Nevertheless, I will think about it for a while, and see what other poeple think about this. So, if anyone else is reading this, please write your opinion here below. My regards, --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 08:23, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- It's fine the way it is. The existing images are classics. Haber 12:15, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
