[edit] Dos Pueblos Jazz Choir

The Dos Pueblos Jazz Choir is noted as being one of the top jazz choirs in the country. The choir features big-band style vocal jazz. The full choir is unusally large for jazz groups, offering a dramatic richness, dynamics, and versatility. It is often said within the choir that this was Duke Ellington's dream, to have a larger jazz choir creating the "big band" sound. Emphasizing swing and bebop styles, the choir features strong soloists who improvise easily around the melody. A combo of brass, woodwind, string, and rhythm instruments enhances the group's captivating performances.

The choir frequently performs around the community, both as an entire choir and as a smaller octet. They also compete at many jazz competitions in the U.S. including Reno, Monterey, and North Texas. Every two years, the choir also has a chance to have a two-week European tour, performing in such jazz festivals as Montreux, North Sea, and Umbria; they also perform on various other stages during their tour.

Every few years, the choir also produces an album, which are compilations of songs the various choirs have done each year. Their third and most recent album is scheduled for release in 2007.

The choir has garnered many awards over the years. They won the Reno Jazz Festival in 2001, and most recently won the North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison, Texas in 2006. They have also frequently won awards from various organizations and newsgroups as being one of the top performance groups in their community.

The choir was conducted for many years by Isaac Jenkins, a sort of jazz icon in his community. However, he retired in 2006. The choir is now conducted by Brian Slotnick-Lastrico, another director in the community known for his knowledge of music and theater.

[edit] Dos Pueblos Instrumental Music Program

[edit] Marching/Concert Band

The Dos Pueblos High School Marching band is the biggest group in the Instrumental Music Program at Dos Pueblos. It is comprised of drumline, color guard, and horn line, which all compete and perform as one group. The Marching Chargers perform at prep football games as half time entertainment, in parades such as the Santa Barbara Downtown Holiday Parade, and also compete all along the south coast against other marching bands. The band meets daily during normal class schedule to practice music and drill for their field show; in addition they have at least one night rehearsal every week before a game or competition.

Every year the group changes the theme of its show. For the 2005-2006 season, the band performed a show based on the Pixar Animation Studios film The Incredibles. Previous shows have included The Phantom of the Opera, Grease, and Les Misérables. The show for their 2006/2007 season is "Flight." At the battle of the bands competition at Moorpark, the band got 1st place for the first time in over 5 years.

Once second semester comes the band splits into smaller groups who each go their separate ways. The Horn Line becomes a performing concert band, the Color Guard becomes Winter Guard, and the Drumline becomes their own performing group just like the rest to showcase their talents with their instrument and compete against others of their level.

[edit] Jazz Ensemble

The Dos Pueblos HS Jazz Ensemble is an award winning group of musicians who play a variety of jazz styles, from the swing and big band music of Duke Ellington to the cool and mild tones of Miles Davis to modern jazz-funk. These young men and women perform at a variety of venues in the Santa Barbara area, as well as the Reno Jazz Festival, and other Community College and High School jazz festivals on the central coast. A few students in this band even take on the responsibility of producing the annual Dos Pueblos High School Jazz Festival, which will be in its 37th year this coming March.

From this band, another, smaller jazz combo is formed. The jazz combo is largely student run and emphasis is placed more on individual improvisation and expression, rather than ensemble playing.

[edit] Drumline

[edit] Color Guard

Using hand and eye coordination along with a wide variety of flags, rifles, sabers, props, and dances, the Color Guard entertains the crowd while they listen to the music of the Marching Band and the beat of the Drumline.
