[edit] Copyright

Hi, I replied to your discussion item (re: Copyright) on my user page. Thanks! :-) -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 9 July 2005 02:54 (UTC)

[edit] Phi Delt

Awesome job on the additions you made yesterday. AriGold 12:20, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ty Cobb

He was, of course, one of the first five, with the most votes. I thought I've read that this was generally considered making him the first player elected. But maybe not. I'll check some sources, plus pose the question to the SABR group I belong to. In the meantime I'll revert to the wording in the article to what it was before. 15:32, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] St Malo

Very nice, very impressive!! Keep it up.--Jondel 05:33, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Elmer Davis

It may be too much to say he was "involved with the formation" of the 442nd - more like he supported the concept of such a regiment. In any event, I only ran across that information quite by chance while trying to track down which American medal he was awarded. And I was only looking THAT up by chance in the first place, as I'd gone to the article primarily to add the reference to his book Giant Killer which is really a terrific book and lamentably out of print now. If you have an interest in this guy you should read the book. Thanks for your comment. -EDM 15:37, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Biju Patnaik

Greetings,

I saw the copyright violation alert for Biju Patnaik, so I wrote a temp article. It's not as long as the plaguarized article, but is derived from multiple sources. I'm hoping a decent article can be established ASAP.

[edit] Kim Deitch

Hi, I noticed you tagged a page in my Kim Deitch section. Anyway, since I fully support the idea that Wikipedia should not be a repository of fancruft, I am going to try and develop this idea on a separate wiki. If you are interested in Deitch, I'll let you know when I get this running. ike9898 22:47, August 20, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Jenna Haze

According to this interview [1] she claims she figured out she is bi when she was six. I don't think we should take it seriously. --Haham hanuka 08:22, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image source/licensing for Image:Black gold pansy.jpg

The image you uploaded, Image:Black gold pansy.jpg, has no no source information. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, ie in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Unless the copyright status is provided, the image will be marked for deletion on 24 October 2005.

This message notification has been automatically sent by NotificationBot managed and run by AllyUnion. Please leave comments regarding bot operations at AllyUnion's talk page. Please direct all comments regarding licensing information at Wikipedia talk:Images for deletion. --NotificationBot 12:32, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem RE: Image:Kappa alpha theta badge.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Kappa alpha theta badge.jpg. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law. We need you to specify two things on the image description page:

  • The copyright holder, and
  • The copyright status

The copyright holder is usually the creator. If the creator was paid to make this image, then their employer may be the copyright holder. If several people collaborated, then there may be more than one copyright holder. If you created this image, then you are the copyright holder.

Because of the large number of images on Wikipedia, we've sorted them using image copyright tags. Just find the right tag corresponding to the copyright status of this image, and paste it onto the image description page like this: {{TAGHERE}}.

There are 3 basic ways to licence an image on Wikipedia:

  • The copyright holder gets the best protection of his work by licencing their work under an open content license like the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence. If you have the express permission of the copyright holder to licence their work under the above licence, use the image copyright tag: {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}. The GNU Free Documentation License is another choice for licencing one's work. Again, if you have the express permission of the copyright holder, use the tag: {{GFDL}}.
  • The copyright holder can also release his work into the public domain, see here for images released into the public domain.
    • Images from certain sources are automatically release into the Public Domain. This is true for most governments like the federal United States government. (See here for images from the government of the USA and here for other governments) However not all governments release their work into the public domain, such as the UK government (See here for images from the UK government). Non-free licence governments are listed here.
  • Also, in some cases, an image is copyrighted but allowed on Wikipedia because of Fair Use. To see if this image qualifies and then how to tag it, see Wikipedia:Fair use.

For any other sources of for more information see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Please remember that if you don't tag your images, they will be deleted.

P.S. If you have uploaded other images without including copyright tags, please go back and tag them. Also, please tag all images that you upload in the future.

If you have any questions, just leave a message on my talk page. Thanks again. --Sherool (talk) 02:19, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

I INCLUDED the link to which this image comes from. Though this image comes from a chapter of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, this image has been released into public domain by the international headquarters of the society. If you doubt it, please contact the staff via their website at www.kappaalphatheta.org. --Dysepsion 07:23, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes I saw the link, but the link does not specify any particular licence hence that whole {{Image copyright}} blurp above. I also checked http://www.kappaalphatheta.org at your request, and theyr terms of service is quite explicit:"(...)We own all rights to our name, crests, symbols, pins, badges, logos, songs, music, graphics, etc., as well as our service marks, trademarks and trade names.", in fact the words "public domain" does not appear anywhere on theyr website (acording to Google). I don't claim to be an expert on copyright law, so I can't comment on the validity of theyr claim, but I see no evidence that they have released this or any other image into the public domain. You might find some more knowledgable people at Wikipedia talk:Copyrights if you want to look into the posibility that the copyright on theyr images have expired or things like that.
IMHO the best bet would probably be to claim fair use, atribute the source and copyright holder(s) and write a good fair use rationale for the image. Thanks, and sorry to "pester" you with boring copyright issues, but it's important to have these things covered. --Sherool (talk) 09:25, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Baseball on Wikicities

Hello Dysepsion, Googie Man here and I want to ask you something as a fellow baseball fan on Wikipedia. Jimbo and Angela have made a new webstie called Wikicities. This link in particular will take you to the baseball Wikicity. As you'll see it's similar to Wikipedia, but my hope is this will allow baseball fans to do more and different things, like reporting on games, in depth statistics, create mulitple pages for pictures, and whatever else baseball fans care to create. You've done great work on Wikipedia and I was hoping you could help get this baseball Wikicity off the ground. Please let me know what you think either at my talk page, or you can email me at terry@wikia.com. Thanks! Googie Man(Talk), 16:24, 6 January 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Regarding Image:Leon vance.jpg

I'm not an admin, so I'd like to let you know that you must add the proper licensing information to Image:Leon vance.jpg. All you need to to is add {{GFDL-self}} under the licensing heading on that page (replacing the no source template) and it will be properly licensed. I cannot do this for you because you are the copyright holder, so you must release the rights. ~MDD4696 01:35, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

This was of course assuming you took the original photo, which you didn't. I've tagged it as fair use for you. ~MDD4696 01:39, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
One last comment - you should probably take a look at Wikipedia:Untagged images. Everybody's not out to get you, we're just tagging images in accordance with Wikipedia policy. If a user is doing a batch of images, he or she doesn't always take the time to customize a template for a particular user. After all, the notice on a user's page is just being polite (it's not required). Since you've apparently uploaded a lot of images without the proper licensing tags, it might be wise to see if you can tag (with a template) the images that others haven't gotten to yourself, or ask someone for assistance. ~MDD4696 01:48, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Many of my photos were tagged until Wiki changed the image policy. Ok Ok I get it, you want to be an admin --† Ðy§ep§ion † 22:36, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dodgers

Can you take a peek at the article for Walter O'Malley. An anonymous user (172.135.51.15) keeps adding what I feel is non NPOV material, but I could be wrong. I need an objective person familar with baseball to look at it with a new eye and perhaps reword the information. The person also just added new information to Los Angeles Dodgers. If you don't mind, I will ask one other to peek, in case you don't have time.

[edit] O'Malley

Writing the O'Malley piece was fun. I contacted the family and they supplied me with names and some of the dates. They also supplied the photograph used in the article. Its a good excuse to be able to contact people and get some experience writing. I just got an envelope in the mail today containing photos for another article. Now if I can just get them to do the scanning, so I don't have to ... --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) 06:18, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Branch Rickey

If you have a flair for Googling, see if you can help me find out when Branch Rickey became president of the Dodgers. I know he was ousted in 1950, but can't find when he started. I also have been looking for who came beofe him. Los Angeles Dodgers/Managers and ownership

  • Charlie Ebbets (1898-1925)
  • Larry MacPhail (1939-?)
  • Branch Rickey (?-1950)
  • Walter O'Malley (1950-1970)
  • Peter O'Malley (1970-1997)
  • Rupert Murdoch (1998-2005)
  • Frank McCourt (2005- )

[edit] AfD for Dartmouth fraternities

I don't want to put strikethroughs in your original proposal because I am a member of Phi Tau fraternity, so bias can certainly be argued. However, part of your proposal is in error. All three of the fraternities you AfD'ed are local fraternities - meaning that they have no association with any national organization. I believe a couple of past articles created about individual chapters of national fraternities on campus have been deleted before, but I don't believe you can fairly use that as a precedent for this vote. It's a vote that's worth having, but I don't want other 3rd-party voters to be misled about the facts. Thanks! -- Smith120bh/TALK 04:18, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help has arrived

You wanted some help, here I am! How can I help you? You can ask your questions right here, and I will respond.--Commander Keane 07:49, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

The admin who closes the AfD should look at each of the voters and descide if they are sockpuppets. Maybe you should leave a note on the suspected sockpuppet's talk page asking them to confirm if they are "real". Also consider expressing your concerns on the AfD talk page - so the closing admin know what to check.--Commander Keane 08:07, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
FYI, I know who Jedsa is in real life. He's not that active on Wikipedia (although he registered fairly recently - not sure if he had IP edits before), but he's a real person and I'm almost certain that's his only account. I have no idea who Jdubrule is, but I'd highly doubt it's sockpuppetry. Feel free to check if you want. I've been monitoring this AfD fairly closely for obvious reasons - and if a delete is decided in the end, I want to make sure that I can have time to copy over appropriate materials to the other article. Don't worry, I'm not going to debate it on your talk page. -- Smith120bh/TALK 13:56, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
No, you're inquiry is nothing against me at all - I just figured that I know one of the users, so I could alleviate at least one fear. I've seen the sock-puppetry happen too (Dartmouth articles are put on AfD fairly often - there's actually a class which has one project to write a Wikipedia article - these fraternity articles are not from that, though). I watch most of the Dartmouth articles, and know who a lot of the editors (and some of the vandals) are. And I'm all for the process, too - this is definitely a worthwhile vote to have. FYI, Alpha Chi Alpha I'd be content with a merge for - its historical significance is very limited. Perhaps the AfD should be split up, as I notice another voter mentioned? I think actually the Phi Tau and Kappa Kappa Kappa articles could be argued with a WP:CORP basis with media articles about them - and they do actually both have registered private corporations behind them. -- Smith120bh/TALK 16:03, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] AfD fpr AbleNET

I saw your post on the AfD and I assure you that the nature of the article isn't self-promoting. I didn't even start the article (or even the first to edit the original posting). Once I noticed it, it became my goal to make it as factual and relevant as possible, including the referencing of other networks (something I don't think a self-serving entry would do). I have taken the suggestions of others to expand the content so as to provide relevancy. Could you perhaps explain what made it seem self serving? I would be agreeable to modifying that section. [edit] Re: Reverting vandalism

Let me explain myself. At the time that that link was added, there was no reason to link Lindsey Jacobellis to Leon Lett other than to disparage her. There was no connection between the two, other than like you said, she had been compared to him in the press. This violates the first sentence on the Wikipedia:Vandalism page you linked me to: Vandalism is any addition, deletion, or change to content made in a deliberate attempt to reduce the quality of the encyclopedia. The edit I reverted was added to draw a connection between two athletes who had nothing in common, which is a deliberate attempt to reduce the quality of the encyclopedia. It was akin to adding a link to O. J. Simpson on Neil Entwistle's page. They have nothing in common, and there is no reason to add this link other than to disparage the subject.

Since then, a paragraph has been added to the article that draws a connection between the two athletes through the comparison of the two in the media. This improves the quality of the article. Having a link to an outside article that has no relation to the article is a reduction in quality.

And really, why stop there? Why not throw a picture of Leon Lett up on Jacobellis's page for no reason? Would that be considered vandalism?

I regret that my reversion has caused this controversy. In the future I will think twice about labeling a reversion like this vandalism.--Josilot 01:47, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Your point has been taken and I will definitely take your suggestions into consideration when editing articles in the future.--Josilot 02:43, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Please look at this page

If you are a supporter of Don Bosco, take a look at this page.

[edit] Sexual Victimization of Native American Women

You voted to keep this article. It is still a very bad article. Since you obviously thought that it has merit, maybe you would be interested in bringing it in line with Wikipedia policy. If you are unwilling or unable to fix this article, maybe you should consider not voting to keep articles like this in future AfD votes. BrianGCrawfordMA 20:26, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Sports Wiki/Community

I noticed you were a Dodgers and Angels Fan. My friends and I started a sports wiki/community that you may be interested in. It uses Wikipedia's software but we made a lot of technological improvements to allow for more news, opinion articles, and better integration of sports statistics. The site is located here: http://www.armchairgm.com. Check our baseball, Dodgers, and Angels section its pretty cool:

   * http://armchairgm.com/mwiki/index.php?title=MLB
   * http://armchairgm.com/mwiki/index.php?title=Los_Angeles_Dodgers
   * http://armchairgm.com/mwiki/index.php?title=Los_Angeles_Angels

When you get the chance, let me know what you think.

Thanks!
