Lord Great Chamberlain Edward de Vere, 17. Earl von Oxford

Das Amt des Lord Great Chamberlain von England ist das sechste unter den Great Officers of State und rangiert zwischen dem des Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal und dem des Lord High Constable. Nicht zu verwechseln ist der Lord Great Chamberlain als Staatsbeamter mit dem Lord Chamberlain of the Household, der hingegen Hofbeamter ist.

Der Titel ist erblich und wurde einst von König Heinrich I. von England bald nach seiner Thronbesteigung 1100 an Robert Malet übertragen, dem Sohn eines der führenden Gefährten von William, dem Eroberer. 1133 aber erklärte König Heinrich Titel und Besitztümer der Malets für verwirkt und übertrug das Amt des Lord Great Chamberlain an Aubrey de Vere, dessen Sohn das Amt weiterführte und zum Aubrey de Vere, 1. Earl of Oxford geadelt wurde. Danach haben die Earls of Oxford den Titel fast ununterbrochen bis 1526 geführt mit ein paar Ausnahmen aufgrund von Hochverratsprozessen.

1526 aber verstarb John de Vere, 14. Earl of Oxford ohne direkten männlichen Nachfolger, lediglich seine Tanten als weibliche Erben hinterlassend. Die Grafschaft erbte nun ein entfernter Verwandter, ein Vetter zweiten Grades. König Heinrich VIII. verleibte daraufhin Amt und Adelstitel der Krone ein und benannte anschließend einen 15. und 16. Earl von Oxford zum Lord Chamberlain, ohne dass der Titel dadurch erblich wurde.

Erst Königin Maria I. berechtigte die Earls of Oxford wieder, Amt und Adelstitel auf erblicher Basis weiterzugeben. Als 1626 Henry de Vere, der 18. Earl of Oxford starb, hinterließ er wiederum einen entfernten männlichen Verwandten und einen näher stehenden weiblichen, so dass das Oberhaus schließlich entschied, dem männlichen Erben, Robert Bertie, 14. Baron Willoughby de Eresby, später Earl of Lindsey, das Amt zu übertragen.

Die Earls of Lindsey, später Herzöge von Ancaster und Kesteven, blieben Amtsinhaber, bis 1779 der 4. Herzog von Ancaster und Kesteven starb, zwei Schwestern als weibliche und einen Onkel als männlichen Erben hinterlassend. Der Onkel ist dann 5. Herzog geworden, aber das Oberhaus entschied, dass den Schwestern Priscilla und Georgiana gemeinschaftlich das Amt des Lord Great Chamberlain zugesprochen wurde und sie das Recht erhielten, einen Stellvertreter zu ernennen, um ihre Aufgaben wahrzunehmen.

Der Anteil am Amt von Priscilla ist 1870 nach zwei Generationen männlicher Erben auf zwei von ihren Enkelinnen aufgeteilt worden und wurde in den nachfolgenden Jahrzehnten noch mehrere Male aufgeteilt. Der Anteil von Georgiana ist dagegen immer wieder von einem einzelnen männlichen Erben übernommen worden, der sich dann Marquess von Cholmondeley nennen durfte.

Zu einem bestimmten Anlass übt immer nur eine einzelne Person das Amt des Lord Chamberlain aus. Die verschiedenen Personen, die Anteile an der Chamberlainship halten, bilden faktisch eine Erbengemeinschaft, in der das Recht, bei einem bestimmten Anlass wie z.B. der Krönung britischer Monarchen das Amt auszuüben, entsprechend zwischen den Anteilseignern rotiert. Die Marquesses von Cholmondeley halten dabei eine Hälfte vom Amt und können daher bei jeder zweiten Gelegenheit das Amt ausüben oder einen Stellvertreter berufen.

The House von Lords Act 1999 schaffte die Regelung ab, dass erblicher Adel automatisch zum Sitz im Oberhaus berechtigt. Ausgenommen davon blieben etwa neunzig erbliche Vertreter, darunter die Erben des Amtes vom Lord Chamberlain und vom Earl Marshal, damit sie weiterhin ihre zeremonialen Funktionen ausüben können.
