[edit] Critic Portfolios
I noticed there was an option in the infoboxes to include portfolios would that be smart for Critic Positions in Shadow Cabinets?--Jack Cox 06:03, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
I am including Parliamentary secretary as an important job just like a cabinet minister but not like at the same level you know of the cabinet= I would guess, I think that Parliamentary Secretary is usually listed when you watch CPAC. But, I'm also looking to fix out of date or bad images of MP's.--Jack Cox 06:08, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Arrogance
I've interacted with you a few times in the past, and you always struck me as reasonable and thorough. Unlike many users who are just looking to argue, you seem knowledgeable about Wikipedia policy and interested in what's best for the Wiki. So it hurt when you called me arrogant. I've been called much worse by other users, but it didn't mean as much, since I don't really care what they think.
Do you really think me unduly arrogant? Do you think my behavior is driving people away from Wikipedia? I'd really like to know. All the best, – Quadell (talk) (random) 22:48, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I felt your comments were indeed arrogant. This is because I don't think you see the full scope of what is happening. People leave Wikipedia for reasons. While they leave on their own free will, they are motivated by certain factors.
- Unfortunately, your actions have been driving people away from Wikipedia. This is why it is important that we come to a solution for the betterment of the project. Please, let's see where eachother is coming from so we can stop the exodus.
- Thanks, -- Earl Andrew - talk 23:03, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- What actions do you mean, specifically? Are you referring only to my saying that people leave of their own accord, or is it something else? – Quadell (talk) (random) 12:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- The whole way in which the culling fair use images have been implemented has been detrimental to the project. People are annoyed, and are leaving, and it is discouraging newer Wikipedians. Had this policy been active since Wikipedia's beginning, I wouldn't have had a problem with it, but because it has been implemented now, we are running into severe problems. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:31, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] CanElec templates
Is there general agreement to include a +/- column? I removed these from my pages some time ago, thinking they had fallen into disuse. CJCurrie 04:07, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- I just found it too annoying to use, given the problems with redistributed ridings. There was just too much blank space. CJCurrie 04:26, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Can I ask what titles? I might have access to them at library, as well. CJCurrie 04:35, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] List of cities in Canada
I have a suggestion...maybe at the top of each province's subsection, we should provide a brief description of that province's criteria for city status. I've occasionally considered initiating a "City status in Canada" article, similar to the one that already exists for City status in the United Kingdom, but I think it would probably be better to just give brief summaries within the list itself. Any chance I could talk you into helping out with that, since I don't know all the relevant statistics? Bearcat 02:54, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Canadian ridings infobox
There definitely needs to be a municipal-subdivision addition to the infobox template, but I don't think I understand the "if" parameters, either. Maybe just listing it as "Municipalities/Neighbourhoods" for now? FUNgus guy 22:21, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading the picture of the Hamilton, Ontario Coat of Arms. I am concerned that the file may be removed due to a lack of clarity on the Copyright status. Do you have any information about this image? Alan.ca 01:46, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
I really appreciate that you address the image issues with the Hamilton, Ontario article by providing an open licensed coat of arms and flag. [edit] Image:Bonfohabbas.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Bonfohabbas.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok ☠ 02:05, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Mergers
Hey Earl, I figured that we should get others in on our discussion, so I've moved it to Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Electoral_districts_in_Canada#Riding_of_the_month.3F. I agree that we should have a policy about it to be consistent. Regards, Ground Zero | t 20:35, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

- If you can find the motivation you might like to add the match by match results for the B Divisions as well. I saw you also merged some of the articles, good job. I'm sure we will meet somewhere on Wikipedia more often :) SportsAddicted | discuss 00:54, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think you should have removed the internal links to national curling teams. Unless they are not created yet that could and should be done in the future in my opinion. SportsAddicted | discuss 13:06, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, well that would be mainly the same. I know curling works with teams and one team can miss out on a tournament one year and be back the year after, but they're still national teams. However, I'm planning to create these pages for the Dutch national team and in these articles there is the possibility to name the variation in the teams representing the country year by year. SportsAddicted | discuss 18:35, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know, but I would say why not? For me personally I am too addicted to all kind of sports and I can not focus on one sport in particular. But if you are totally into one sport I think a project like that might work. I'm sure there will be more people interested in joining you. SportsAddicted | discuss 22:09, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oh I do and I check several WikiSportProjects around. When you're creating a Curling project I will definately add it to my watch list and help out every now and then. SportsAddicted | discuss 03:18, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] BC elections 1952 and 1953
I seem to recall you were in the Wiki Elections project last time around and noted your name in the history on the 1952 election; I just posted a response to someone's copyvio ticket and was hoping for backup/corroboration, or at least somebody who could work the fact template so as to put in quotation marks and cite the explanation of the elimination ballot as gleaned from the Elections BC webpages (which are not, to my knowledge, copyrighted). [edit] Untagged image
An image you uploaded, Image:Winnipegcoa.gif, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 02:02, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Gvrdflag.PNG
Thanks for uploading Image:Gvrdflag.PNG. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Denelson83 11:42, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Hockeyczechrepublic.PNG)
Thanks for uploading Image:Hockeyczechrepublic.PNG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Problem with Image:Wikimeetup.PNG
Earl, you may want to revise the license for Image:Wikimeetup.PNG. Unfortunatelly, you can't release it to the public domains, as it contains the Wikipedia logo, which is copyrighted to the Wikimedia Foundation. And if you're not the author of the other image used in the composition, you should check it's licensing conditions to make sure both images can really be combined (if the other image is cc-by, for instance, I believe we can't combine it with the logo). Best regards, --Abu Badali 17:30, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Please, consider being more careful next time. It's actually a hard taks to create a copyright violation by composing images on commons, and it's unfortunate that it happened. [edit] List of mayors
Hi, It seems that you are systematically removing external links for internal links even if they don't exist. Is there a Wikipedia rule that I missed? ClaudeSB 19:59, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Not sure, but I'd prefer them to be redlinks so that articles on them can be created. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:01, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- This would mean that since there is some information on some external link, people should create stubs with the external link or is there another way?
ClaudeSB 20:11, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
-
-
- Thanks for the rapid reply. As I have time, i will go thru the list and crate stubs with external links as you suggest. This brings my next question: There are now 3 pages dealing with "Michel Tremblay", the playwright, the past Rimouski Mayor and the current Varennes Mayor. How about creating a disambiguation page?
- ClaudeSB 20:57, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
-
Well, I'm not sure how famous the playright is, but if he is far and above more famous than the others, then the dab page will go at Michel Tremblay (disambiguation). I don't know if you'd like to do this, or if you're asking me to do so. -- Earl Andrew - talk 22:42, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Children of the Prime Ministers of Canada
Hi Earl Andrew,
Not sure if you noticed but Children of the Prime Ministers of Canada is up for deletion. I think your list is worthy of being in Wikipedia. Alas, it looks like it will be deleted. Sigh, sometimes I wonder why I bother contributing here when good articles like this one will be deleted but all the articles in Category:Lists of fictional characters by series are worthy. --YUL89YYZ 22:38, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry I just noticed that you voted. This AfD is bugging me. --YUL89YYZ 22:46, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- I created the List of Children of the Presidents of the United States and now the delete club is trying to get rid of it as they are trying to get rid of the one you created. They aren't singling out Canadian lists, they hate President lists too. I try to merge them when they get deleted. You may want to save your info just in case it gets deleted. Right now the Canadian list of children is looking safer than the U.S. one which is tied. I voted to keep both (obviously). Jjmillerhistorian 14:15, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- I've weighed in with a vote - also put a keep item in the AfD for List of Children of the Presidents of the United States. Let's hope this helps keep the articles.
- Meanwhile, thanks for your work on the recent Ottawa WikiMeet, although it looks like a challenge to get the crowds out. Hi. I've noticed that you've changed the name of some articles I've written about defunct Ontario townships from Placename to Placename Township. No problem, I'll name any new articles I create accordingly. However, I am a little confused about naming conventions. [edit] Arbitration re: Abu badali
Hi. I am writing you because you were one of the respondants on the RfC about Abu badali that was started back in November. There has been no substantive comment there for over a month and User:Abu badali has never bothered to respond to the RfC. The last comment on the talk page of the RfC was a suggestion to take it to arbitration, which is what I propose we do. Accordingly, I have created a shell/draft listing to add to the list of Arbitration Committee matters here. I've listed your new there, preliminarily, as a complaintant. If you are not interested in participating, please remove your name. If you are, please add your comments as we must prepare a 500 word summary of the case. [edit] Alert
I hadn't seen that before. How does it work and how do you identify which "Dissemination Blocks" are which? it says that 6204003303 has 5 people but how can you tell it's Alert? I'm interested in seeing where the 21 people in Kitikmeot, Unorganized are and then I can update it like Baffin, Unorganized. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk)
- Ah, too bad. I was hoping for a link to a page with the Dissemination Blocks, their numbers and a name. I guess if I wan't to figure out the Kitikmeot one I'll just have to go with trial and error. Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:27, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use images I tagged a while ago
Earl Andrew, you may remember a while ago when I gave you notice that I tagged a few replaceable images you uploaded for speedy deletion. I was thinking and, it may not mean anything to you, but I'm sorry I did that. I probably should not have tagged them for speedy deletion since you uploaded in 2005. I don't mean to say that I think the images should have continued being used, but I think I should have notified you of a formal IFD. Because IFD is a centralized page, people would have been able to easily comment on whether or not they thought the images should be deleted. I am now beginning to think that, because of the opportunity for centralized discussion, this process is more appropriate to consider older images. I hope you will accept my apology. --Iamunknown 01:15, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Your maps
Once again, I'd like to compliment you on your election-result maps. They look great.
The last thing I want to do is discourage you. However, I do recommend that in the future you consider cutting down on the number of colours. I would recommend that you use no more than two colours for each party. Another idea, if you're really set on using four colours for each party, might be to use shades of red, blue and yellow rather than mess with teal or anything like that.
You might want to look at the map in today's National Post of the election results. It's very simple, using black, grey and white for the three parties. But the message is very clear as soon as you look at it. Your maps are far more attractive but take some staring at to gather what they're trying to say. There's a give-and-take between clarity and the amount of information provided. Considering the great amount of detail available in the text, it might be worthwhile to move a bit toward the side of simplicity.
But it's your call -- you're the one whose put forth the effort to make the maps, so you get to decide how they look. -- Mwalcoff 23:38, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well, it's up to you; newspapers would generally favour clarity over faithfulness to party colours, but you're not working for a newspaper. -- Mwalcoff 01:59, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Curling Howwood
How comes Howwood is marked as Greenacres in the senior curling championships? Is Greenacres a club in Howwood? Simply south 13:14, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- OK. Thats cleared things up. Right now i have readded where Howwood's current article location is. The reason for this is there are 2 Howwoods (or exceedingly close) in the UK. Simply south 18:13, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
