Movements from Transport Canada.[3] Passengers from Edmonton Airports.[4] |
Edmonton International Airport (IATA: YEG, ICAO: CYEG) is experiencing the fastest rate of growth in passenger traffic of any major airport in the nation and is currently 5th busiest airport in Canada by passenger traffic and the 13th busiest by aircraft movements[3]. Located approximately 35 km (22 miles) south of Edmonton's central business district, it is the primary air passenger and air cargo facility in Edmonton, Alberta and a major hub facility for Northern Alberta and Northern Canada. It served over 5.2 million passengers in 2006[4] and is operated by the Edmonton Airports Authority. It is a WestJet focus city.
Edmonton International Airport is located close to the towns of Devon and Beaumont, and the city of Leduc. The airport is also located near Nisku, a major industrial park north of Leduc. Leduc and Nisku offer a number of hotels, restaurants, guarded parking lots (for those who opt not to pay the airport's parking fee), and hotel-terminal transportation.

[edit] History
Originally constructed in 1960, the airport underwent a $350 million CAD renovation and expansion program from 1996-2004, including the construction of a new south terminal, a multi-level parking facility, central hall connecting the north and south terminals, commuter facility and a doubling of the apron. Typical of many other airports, the two terminals are shaped together in a fashion akin to a chevron (">"). Edmonton International Airport is one of 8 Canadian Airports that has US Border Pre-clearance facilities, where travelers clear US Customs at the airport prior to boarding flights bound for any airport in the United States.
[edit] Growth
Edmonton International Airport's passenger traffic has grown tremendously in recent years.[5]

[edit] Future expansion
Construction of a 184-room Courtyard by Marriott Hotel is expected to begin by the summer of 2007. The hotel will be located beside the north terminal and will be linked to it by a covered, heated walkway. Future plans include expansion of parking facilities, the expansion of the U.S. holdroom area, and the partial renovation and expansion of the original (north) terminal.
A new $200 million expansion project has just been approved for the airport in 2006 that will enable the airport to handle 7.5 million passengers by 2015. The construction will include a new north terminal expansion, increased tarmac area, and increased parking facilities. The parkade is currently undergoing an expansion to include an additional 1,000 stalls. The north terminal expansion is expected to begin in 2008 and be complete by 2010. The airport in its current state was built to comfortably accommodate 5.5 million passengers per year, and up to about 7 million passengers at the most if necessary. This figure of 5.5 million was originally projected for 2015 at the time of construction of the south terminal in 1998-2000. However, this figure is now likely to be reached before 2008.
Long-term future plans include construction of a large new terminal to the southeast of the existing south terminal with as many as 14-20 new gates and a massive tarmac expansion as well.
