Ef (Ф, ф) is the twenty-first letter of the Cyrillic alphabet. It represents /f/, a voiceless labiodental fricative.
It was directly derived from the Greek letter phi (Φ). Additionally, it has replaced Fita (Ѳ) in the Russian version of the alphabet since 1918. Unlike phi, however, it is transliterated as "f", not "ph", even though the Latin letter F derives from the obsolete Greek letter digamma and is not related to the Greek letter phi.
Slavic languages do not have native words containing ф; consequently, it is only found in words of foreign (especially Greek, Latin, French, German, and English) origin.[citation needed]
