[edit] Welcome

[edit] A welcome from Sputnik

Hi, Evan Robidoux, Welcome to Wikipedia!
Hello, bonjour, salut, privyet, konichiwa, shalom, hola, salve, sala'am, bonjourno, and hi! I'm Sputnik. I noticed that you were new and/or have yet to receive any messages so I just thought I'd pop in to say "hello". We're glad to have you in our community! I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it's so big but we won't bite so Be Bold and get what you know down in microchips! If you do make a mistake, that's fine, we'll assume good faith and just correct you: it'll take a few seconds maximum! I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Though we all make goofy mistakes, here is what Wikipedia is not. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to see the help pages or add a question to the village pump. The Community Portal can also be very useful. If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you. Here are a few links to get you started:
And remember:
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.
  • P.S. I'm happy to help new users. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you need help with anything or simply wish to say hello. :)

Happy Wiki-ing!

[edit] Answer:

How do I become better known on Wikipedia? How long does it take?

Well, that's a very tricky question; what do you mean by "better known"? I don't think the majority of users are "well-known"; I'm not that well known myself; there are some users who are a little more "famous" than others - off the top of my head I can think of User:Kate, User:Essjay, User:Curps, User:Fir0002, and of course User:Jimbo Wales... I assume the list would be different for other people. However, if you want to be better known, what you would have to do is be a good wikipedian. Here are some things you could do: write a lot of very good articles, make a lot of very good edits, revert a lot of vandalism, settle disputes, and generally be a kind, civil, generous, and courteous wikipedian. I can't tell you how much courtesy and civility are respected; rather, lack of courtesy and civility will be the first things to cause you to lose respect. It will take a long time; months at the least. I've been here 9 months, and do I think I'm well known? No; if you asked 20 random wikipedians who User:Sputnikcccp is, they would have no idea. The same with most users (with the exception of User:Jimbo Wales, whom I think pretty much everyone knows of). Of course, those people that I've worked with know me, and the same would I recommend to you: if you collaborate with other people, they will know you, and so your "fame" will grow. It will take time and patience though, and is not that good of a goal; we're really here to build an encyclopedia, not get better known. Better an unknown user who makes excellent edits than one that everyone knows but who does nothing. My advice is take it slow, help out with articles that you know about, check Special:Recent Changes for vandalism, go through random pages and correct typos, etc... If you want things to do, check out the link to the Community Portal I gave you in the welcome. It has lists of things you can do; work slow, steady, and hard, and I'm sure I'll be glad to have met you.
  • By the way, you may want to add yourself to some user categories, such as Category:Teenage Wikipedians, Category:Wikipedians interested in computer and video games, or Category:Wikipedians in Connecticut. Just add a link to those categories on the bottom of your user page, with a link to your user name, like this: [[Category:Teenage Wikipedians|Evan Robidoux]].

Hope this answers your question! СПУТНИКССС Р 00:52, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

How did I know? Let's just say I'm psychic... Actually, I thought: "Evan Robidoux" is probably his real name; so I googled your name out of curiosity, and I found your name in a list of "Students of the Month" from your school newsletter, which was adressed from Bristol, Connecticut. Sneaky, eh... Don't worry, I'm not stalking you; I live in Canada! ; -) СПУТНИКССС Р 01:07, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Becoming well known

Hi evan, if you'd like to work together with a smaller group of people that you could get to know better, consider joining one of the WikiProjects. These projects can give you some guidelines into what you might edit, and many of them have some kind of community collaboration. See for example: WP:GCOTW. Cheers! Jacoplane 09:30, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Follow the link to WikiProjects I provided above to view a list of the different projects. Usually you just add yourself to the list of participants on the project homepage to join. It's a good idea to add the page to your watchlist so you can keep track of the discussion. Hope that helps. Jacoplane 02:19, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] HI!

HI! Are you new to this site? I am to if you are and if you are not, can yyou help guide me around this place?

[edit] CVU

Hi, no there are no specific requirements to helping out in vandal fighting. See: Wikipedia:Recent changes patrol and WP:CVU. Everything you need to know is there ;) Jacoplane 01:30, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Question about vandalism

It depends on how you look at it. I find vandalism to my user page amusing, which is why I keep a counter of how many times vandals have decided to drop by (42!). :) It's not supposed to be stressful, really, since vandalism can always be reverted. You should view it as an honor, as it's a way of having your presence at Wikipedia acknowledged. :) This is why editors who combat vandalism often tend to have their user pages vandalized more frequently. Hope this answer helps. Regards, Sango123 (talk) 01:47, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] No longer

That comment you made yesterday made me hurt. Look, I have not vandalized a page for 5 days and I'm not going to vandalize anymore pages, so why did you still think I was a vandal when I'm trying to get all the help I can get on making useful contributions on this site? 68.96.23.7 22:04, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

I cannot see where the offense is. IMO Evan was just trying to be helpful. I don't see any need to apologise. Jacoplane 22:47, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Help- Expand Morrowind Stub

I'll see what I can do. I can't think of too much about them, but I should be able to come up with something. Niroht 22:21, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Part of it is that I spend a lot of the time in the game walking around, talking to people, things like that. I play the Xbox version so I'm not distracted by mods to the program. Another part is that I remember stuff like that really easily, and the third part is that some of these facts are trains of logic, which upon study can be verified, but are not immediately obvious. Niroht 12:55, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for getting me unblocked! Now I can focus on getting rid of vandalism- as long as you help me.68.96.23.7 22:20, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm really sorry about vandalizing your user page. I know you are not mad, but I am really sorry about it.68.96.23.7 21:35, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tip

How do you post warnings on vandal's talk pages? Oh yeah, can I be blocked for angering a vandal?68.96.23.7 21:50, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Currently I am checking histories of pages that have been vandalized in the past. Oh, can I give my own personal warnings to vandals? I think that can work too. I have done that to a couple pages already.68.96.23.7 22:09, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help

Admins have "rollback" links beside edits on user contribution and diff pages. According to Wikipedia:Revert, "clicking on the link reverts to the previous edit not authored by the last editor, with an automatic edit summary of 'Reverted edits by X to last version by Y'." Currently, the quickest summary for you to manually type would be rvv, which stands for revert vandalism, but you might find godmode-light.js on http://sam.zoy.org/wikipedia/ of interest. :) Regards, Sango123 (talk) 01:46, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Evan. Here's what a double redirect is and how to fix it: Page X redirects to page Y, which, in turn, redirects to page Z. You can fix it by editing page X so it redirects straight to Z, with an edit summary of "fix double redirect". Thanks, Sango123 (talk) 22:13, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Signature

If you want to create a custom signature, like this: СПУТНИКССС Р, then you click on "my preferences", and where it says "nickname"under your user profile, you type in what you want to appear as your signature. As for making your signature; I'll tell you a secret: I can't program or anything, and even wiki code confuses heck out of me, so what i did was i found someone else's signature that i liked, copied the code, and played with it in my sandbox until i liked it. Then once you have it in your nickname, enable "raw signature" and then click "save". If that explanation made no sense, see Customizing your signature. Hope this helps! СПУТНИКССС Р 02:06, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Done and done. I'm sure there's more that can be written about it but unless your userboxes lie then you know it's 11:00 and I'm too tired to do too much. Niroht 03:56, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Header

It's sorta hard to explain but... I guess I could help you make one if you want and then after I'm done you can see. Wanna do that? Moe ε 00:54, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Im more than happy to do it for you. What links do you want in the header? A small list will help... Moe ε 01:02, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Could you? Then I'll create it. :-D Moe ε 01:16, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Finished it. I'll add it to your pages now. :-D Moe ε 01:35, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Your welcome. If wish to view the header itself see: User:Evan Robidoux/Header. If you need anything else in the form of user page creation you can always send me a message. :-D Moe ε 01:43, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Missing Barnstar

Basically, if you feel that you've NPOV'D the whole of the English Wikipedia, reverted all the vandalism, freed us of all trolls, and you haven't gotten a barnstar for it, you place that (the barnstar) up. It's kinda like a hint. Or you can give it to somebody who you feel is working extremely hard but isn't being recognized. --MasTer of Puppets Peek! 20:45, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Yep, you've got it nailed :). However, just because a Missing Barnstar is on your page doesn't mean people will come flying to give you one; it's just a hint, as I said, not an obligation. --MasTer of Puppets Peek! 20:58, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
No problem ^_^ And sorry for leeching off of Sango's talk page, I don't know why I do it; trying to help out, I guess :P --MasTer of Puppets Peek! 21:01, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Looks like you've got it. (Thanks for being a leech, Master of Puppets. :P) By the way, the green toolbox on your user page looks familiar... :) Sango123 (e) 21:54, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Question about "biting newcomers"

No, definitely not. If someone adds those types comments to articles, issue as many {{test}} warnings as needed. Sango123 (e) 00:33, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Citing from a book

The format for citing from a book, is quite simple. An example below:

  • Hees, Peter, Indian Religions: A Historical Reader of Spiritual Expression and Experience, (2002) p359. NYU Press, ISBN 0-81473-650-5

Last name, first name, Complete name of the book, (year of publication), page number, publisher name, ISBN number

The ISBN number and publisher are usually in the front matter of the book. You can also find out that information in Amazon.com. For the above example, see: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0814736505/

Now, if you want to add a citation inline with the text, what you do is a s follows:

<ref>Hees, Peter, ''Indian Religions: A Historical Reader of Spiritual Expression and Experience'', (2002) p359. NYU Press, ISBN 0-81473-650-5</ref>

And then, add a section called References and place this:

<references />

And you will get this:

What is known is that Ramananda accepted students of all castes, a fact that was contested by the ortodox Hindus of that time, and that his students formed the first generation of Sants.[1]

Hope this helps. ≈ jossi ≈ t@ 04:45, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Of course, you can change this userbox slightly to a more lighter colour. Thank You for your feedback! --Siva1979Talk to me 07:47, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

It looks satisfactory. However, I feel that adding a bit more colour to the userbox would make it more striking to look at. Nevertheless, if you feel that there is no need to change the colouring of the template, let's leave it as it is. Anyway, thanks for your feedback. This is not such a big deal after all! --Siva1979Talk to me 15:10, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about this....but a page Spawn Man had created and put as a sub-page on his user page has been put up on AfD.... i really see nothing wrong in the page but still people are fighting over it.... and SpawnMan has lost all faith in Wikipedia.... It'd really be nice of you if you could lend your support to Keep the page....as it does not violate any rules of user pages... any kind of support would be truly appreciated...... Thanks a lot!!! [edit] Multi-language Wikipedias

Well, you wouldn't need a different keyboard to type in other languages with the Latin alphabet, like French, Phillipino, etc... I have, on my e-Mac, a little menu on top where I can change the letters from US, Canadian, or international where I can add stuff like Hebrew. The keyboard itself doesn't change, but the symbols represented by the keys change; i.e. when I press the "a" key when in the Hebrew mode, I get the Hebrew letter ’א’. I can type in pretty much any language by selecting "Open International". Hope this helps! СПУТНИКССС Р 02:32, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Uploading Images

Well, the first step is going to Special:Upload to upload the actual picture. However, the hardest part is in deciding what the license is; usually, don't use images from Google Image search. After entering the desired file name, click save; then, when the page reloads, you have your image on Wikipedia. Now, all you have to do is insert the image's filename into any area, like this; Image:Filename.fileformat (where fileformat is, insert the image format, i.e. jpg, png, etc.). Optionally, you can extend the code by typing [[Image:Filename.fileformat|70px|thumb|right|.text.]]. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask! _-M o P-_ 02:03, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Kinda like a copyright; it is a copyright, in fact (see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags). Basically, you need to have permission to use the image. If you made it yourself say so; if you got it from somewhere else, then state where and pick a license. I can't describe it as well as the Copyright tags page, but generally try not to upload images you don't know the license of. _-M o P-_ 02:09, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Yes, {{pd-self}}. _-M o P-_ 02:16, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Yep, all good. If you want, go in there and delete one of the PD-self templates to prevent clutter. _-M o P-_ 02:30, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Assuming Good Faith

Well, first try to confirm if it is random gibberish. Of course, if it details the mating patterns of a type of pink yeti, then feel free to tag it with a {{db}} tag. You can also {{prod}} it. However, for trickier issues where you have a small suspicion that it is a hoax or vanity, submit it to WP:AFD. For the random gibberish, inform the author that created the page about the situation, so that nobody is shut out of the loop. But basically in any case there are 2 basic steps; talk to the author and put up some kind of tag. If you get into an edit war with someone who keeps removing your warnings, however, inform an administrator (Note: If a {{prod}} warning is removed by anyone at all, do not readd it, as it is only allowed to be added once. If deleted, proceed to add an {{afd}} tag. _-M o P-_ 21:28, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! To get reviewed, just use the template on the page ({{Editor-review}}; Username is {{{1}}}, statement is {{{2}}}), add it to the top-most section of reviews, and there you have it. I'm not sure if there is a limit, but try not to depend on the word of others too much (called back-seat driving). Just use it for a friendly nudge or some advice. Good luck! (note:be sure to add subst: in front of the template.) _-M o P-_ 22:07, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
