- February 8 - Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, longtime favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, rebels against the queen; his revolt is quickly crushed.
- February 25 - Robert Devereux is beheaded.
- February 25 - Tycho Brahe moves to the palace of Curtius in Prague, rented by the emperor Rudolf II; the astronomical instruments are also moved to the palace.
- April - Tycho writes in a letter that all of the instruments are in the palace of Curtius.

- July - Johannes Kepler is given the assignment to calculate the Rudolfian Tables.
- July 17 - Tycho's daughter Elisabeth is married to Tengnagel in Prague.
- July 24 - Tycho receives his last letter from Ulrik of Meklenburg.
- October 11 - Tycho's last observation is recorded.
- October 13 - During a banquet hosted by Peter Vok von Rosenberg, Tycho becomes ill, most probably due to poisoning or acute prostatitis.
- October 24 - Tycho dies of ureamia (urine in the blood, symptom of some poisonings with heavy metals; mercury was found in his hair taken a couple of days before he died) between 9-10 in the morning.
- October 28 - The emperor Rudolf II purchases all the instruments and observations from Tycho's widow Kirsten.
- November 4 - Tycho is buried in the Teyn-church at Prague. On his tombstone are the words:" Non faces nec opes, sola artis sceptra perennant" (English: "Neither power nor wealth, only Art and Science will endure").
- 24 December (Julian Calendar) - The Battle of Kinsale ends the siege of Kinsale, Ireland, a siege thate started in the autumn of 1601. and ended in the which happened on according to the Gregorian Calendar used by the Irish and Spanish forces in the battle, its date was 3 January 1602.
