As a means of recording the passage of time, the 17th century was that century which lasted from January 1st, 1601 through December 31st, 1700 in the Gregorian calendar. Note that 1601 is the first year of the 17th century, not 1600 as is often erroneously believed.

The AD/BC notation does not use a year zero; however, astronomical year numbering does use a minus sign, so '2 BC' is equal to 'year -1', '1 BC' is equal to astronomical 'year 0', and so forth. In the Gregorian system, the NNth century AD starts in the base year 'NN-100+1' and ends in the 'NN'th year, so for example, the 16th century begins on January 1st, 1501 and ends December 31st, 1600.
