The agencies of the European Union (or decentralised bodies of the European Union) are bodies which are distinct from the European Union's institutions, in that they have not been created by the treaties but rather by acts of secondary legislation, in order to accomplish a very specific task. Unlike most of the European Union's institutions established in the treaties, each of these agencies has its own legal personality. They may be categorized under the three pillars of the European Union.

Under the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy pillar three agencies have also been set up:
- European Defence Agency (EDA) - located in Brussels
- European Institute for Security Studies (ISS) - located in Paris
- European Union Satellite Centre (EUSC) - located in Torrejón de Ardoz in Spain
[edit] Agencies under the police and judicial cooperation pillar
Under the framework of the third pillar (Police and Judicial Co-operation in Criminal Matters), three agencies have been set up.
- European Police College (CEPOL) - located in Bramshill, United Kingdom
- Europol (European Police Office) - located in The Hague
- Eurojust (European body for the enhancement of judicial co-operation) - located in The Hague

Executive agencies are created by European Commission for a fixed period.
- Intelligent Energy Executive Agency (IEEA) - located in Brussels
- Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency
- Executive Agency for the Public Health Programme
