From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm quite happy about what i'm doing here at Wikipedia, but i've been dreaming too much about it lately, so i'm taking a vacation. I'm trying to take a break from Wikipedia to do some other interesting things - study Arabic and Yiddish, learn to play bass guitar, play in a rock band, cook better pasta etc.
I will probably not read messages at the talk page, but feel free to contact me by email.

My name is Amir E. Aharoni. A Wikipedian since 2004-12-03.
I also have a blog, which you can read here. Ya mama. I'm always glad to receive messages on any subject on my talk page. I also write in the Hebrew Wikipedia.
My interests include
- eating Hummus. I can make it pretty well myself and my favourite place to eat it is Pam-Pam in Tel-Aviv (no, they don't pay me to advertise them). Naji in Abu Ghosh is a close second and Pinati in Jerusalem is third.
- music
- linguistics
- internet
- free software philosophy
- religion, particularly Judaism, and also unusual ones, like Scientology and Latter-Day Saints
and other seemingly unrelated matters.

[edit] Sources and references
After over a year in Wikipedia i grew up and understood how important sources are. So, when i've got time and means, i try to add some myself. Mostly i tag dubious statements with {{fact}}, which you may know as [citation needed]. In many cases responsible editors responded to my requests and added good sources. In some other cases it didn't happen, but at least readers will know not to trust every edit. It's one of the most important things to do for Wikipedia's integrity.
[edit] Spelling
I love languages, dictionaries and encyclopediae of all kinds since i was about five years old. I know English grammar pretty well, but in my personal writing (not in the articles) i spell the word "i" intentionally wrong, because i believe in equality and i don't think that i deserve a capital letter any more than you do.
[edit] Belarus
- I am not Belarusian. I was born in Moscow and i live in Israel. My mother tongue is Russian.
- My preferred spelling for the name of the country that lies between Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine and Poland is Belarus. Not Belorussia, not Byelorussia, and not White Russia. My preference for the spelling of the name of its national language is Belarusian.
- The spelling Belarus and Belarusian was promoted by all Belarusian governments since 1991.
- For rationale see Pravapis and Etymology of Rus and derivatives.
- When i see one of the spellings that i consider wrong, i usually change them, unless i have a good reason not to, for example if it's a direct quote.
[edit] Stalking
I hereby permit every user to stalk me. Really, i don't mind. This is a free community. Read my past edits, read my discussions with other users, send me any kind of messages, request sources. Please be merciless; just don't be tasteless.
[edit] Editing my user page
I explicitly permit everyone to edit my user page within the confines of good taste.
However please think before changing a link to a redirect or disambiguation page, because i might want them like they are now, but i'm open to discussion.
In any case - be bold and ignore all rules.

I license my contributions only under the GFDL. Rationale: I have nothing against Creative Commons and Lawrence Lessig - i read his book "Free Culture" with great pleasure and i respect him and his project, but i have an even greater respect to Richard M. Stallman and the GNU Project (just like Lessig himself). RMS is a visionary and i even admit that i follow him somewhat religiously. So, while i don't really claim to understand the deep differences between CC and GFDL, i consider the GFDL to be just enough. It's all about spirit and vision, and for such matters RMS is the man. |
