Bill, from one Philadelphian to another, thanks for adding the Logo and other info! Jim62sch 14:12, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Clear Light

Thanks...When I was in my late teens I had gotten hooked on 60's music, stumbled accross that album at the music store near 2nd and Market (the one in the "basement" -- 2nd Street Music?), and fell in love with the album. Up 'til now, I thought I was the only person who liked it! Jim62sch 01:03, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ashton-Woodenbridge and Pennypack

I see in the Ashton-Woodenbridge article you also included Pennypack in it as well. Personally i have always looked at them being separate areas, with a tributary, whose name escapes me, and Pennypack Park separating the two, though i'll admit their are similarities between the two communities. Either way that leaves a stray Pennypack link on both the template and on the Neighbourhoods list. I was considering removing it, but looking over my notes and such, i came across an area i neglected to mention, the Pennypack Village/Woods neighbourhood, just across Holme Ave from Ashton-Woodenbridge, was considering renaming the link to reflect the change, thoughts? --Boothy443 | trácht ar 07:15, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

To be hnoest i am suspect of using place names index for little more then a refrence for historical uses, as it does not or rarely say where those neighborhoods and most of the terms are no longer in use, was not aware of the planning department document, looks intresing, have seen similar with research at Penn, another source i have been useing is with the NEIGHBORHOOD TRANSFORMATION INITIATIVE, found it to be a good source. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:33, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nuclear weapons design

Much of your edits were good, but I am putting the link back in to Shaped charges. That article is mostly about other types of shaped explosive devices (traditional shaped charges for armor penetration) but includes basics about wave shaping such as is used in nuclear weapons. We don't have a more specific article about nuclear weapon explosive assemblies (and aren't likely to get it), so that one should be linked. Georgewilliamherbert 23:36, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vince Papale and the Philly articles

Thanks for touching up the Papale article. I had forgotten about that one. Also just wanted to say great work on updating all of the Philly info on the site. Keep it up.--Looper5920 11:46, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I know that sometimes you gotta take a strong stand against crappy articles

but try to find a describer than "worthless". something that conveys what is wrong with an article. thankz, CrackityKzz 18:43, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Well, by Crackity, you must be referring to the Philadelphia transplant article, of course. Worthless, as in "without merit," "having no value," "lacking any basis in reality." I am curious—what did you find useful about this article? How about "hoax" as a describer? I also had "recommended for deletion", which was a comment that other editors had left. I don't know how to change it now. Too late?--BillFlis 19:22, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Hey, waddya know! The very page I was portaying as "worthless" has recently been deleted (not by me).--BillFlis 13:57, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the warning!!

Hey, mbeychok, get with the program. You need to ask Noigel's permission before you change anything on one of his pages. How rude of you to intrude! Didn't you smell his marking of his territory? Take a ball of chalk, or complain to your storm and strife. Go, Noigel! Noigel for benevolent dictator of all Wikipedia! (Not just the itty-bitty parts of legionella, legionellosis, and The Bellevue-Stratford Hotel.) All hail his private domain, his personal glory. And don't denigrate his personal pages, even if you don't know they're his, because it upsets him terribly. Fear his wrath!--BillFlis 03:32, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for warning me. Can you hear me shaking in my boots? - mbeychok 04:32, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More about Noigel and his article Legionnaires' disease

The misspellings "Legionaires' disease", "Legionaire's disease", and "Legionnaire's disease" all redirect to the Legionellosis article, but here we have a separate article on "Legionnaires' disease" with the correct spelling. Is there a plan here?--BillFlis 11:53, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Bill, the plan is that Noigel got tired of being corrected and admonished for his editing the Legionella and Legionellosis, so he simply wrote another article based entirely on his website and named it Legionnaires' disease. Have you ever seen an article written as badly? No references, no internal Wiki links, no external links other than one... and very poor organization. It really should be deleted in its entirety. - mbeychok 15:32, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Philadelphia article

Hey. Your copy edit of the Climate section was really good, the type of thing I'm not eloquent enough to do. I'm sure you know, but the rest of the article could probably use it too, so if you have time... Let's go FA status! --Galaxiaad 03:00, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wilt vs. Jordan, who had the higher scoring average?

the material in question is not biased.wilt and jordan now have the same scoring average because jordan decided to come out of retirment and play.the information is from the nba's own site!!!!!!!i think you would agree that the nba knows it's own players.the other information is from rob cherrys book larger then life you have to read it to confirm it but that is not my fault.at the end of wilt's page rob cherry's book is listed as reading now the book is "no good"the pov thing is a hindrince cause what you see as pov others don't.i like you are from philly and i know these stories to be true.as a matter of fact i went to frankford high where wilt's best friend vince miller coached and teached for 30 years.where the 30.06 and 30.1 came from i like to know?????the nba's own site list them as the same therefore i'll go with them.i think the jordan career avg 1st should be taken down until there is better verification from nba sources

think about it if the nba,the league itself recognizes it as 30.1 it's 30.1 it's their league.if the nba itself says wilt was it's most unstoppable force then he was.plus we all know we can't score 7/100ths of a point, the minimum is 1 point.i like to think of the heisenberg uncertainty priciple when it comes to this.it is impossible to tell you exactly where an electron is going around a atom(the nucleas of protons and neutrons)the numbers are so small that a approximation is given(quantum physics).i find this appropiate with wilt and jordan.you can not score 7/100ths of a point.they both should have a average of 30 points really.but the stories from robs book are true and should be included.

I am reminded of a line from a movie: "Truly, you have a dizzying intellect!"--BillFlis 01:10, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Grange Estate

Hi, I've seen you all over Philadelphia-related articles so I thought I'd give you a chance to take a stab at the above article. Not sure if it's something you care to improve, but, ah well. -Bri 03:34, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, at least I think we saved it from deletion. IMO, it's a worthy topic. Still looking for stuff on John Ross though. He deserves his own article, which would fairly ensure that Grange never gets deleted.--BillFlis 00:57, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Philly

Sorry about that Bill. I was on the new pages patrol, and noticed there was only team names in it. Do most cities have their own sports pages? --ParalysedBeaver 00:08, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Well sorry about that then. Continue to improve Phillys articles :P --ParalysedBeaver 00:30, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categories on user pages

I noticed you have a bunch of Article-namespace categories attached to your user page as I was looking at Category:Adoptive parents. You might want to have a look at the guideline Wikipedia:Categorization#User namespace to see why that's not such a great idea, and why there are categories that include "Wikipedian(s)" specifically for use in the User namespace. Thanks. --Geoff Capp 14:21, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nice job

Nice work on cleanup at Jacob Pavlovitch Adler. It's rare when someone make several changes to my prose and they are all improvements. I like it. - Jmabel | Talk 17:54, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

It might not have been your intention, but you recently removed content from Kim Hill. Please be careful not to remove content from Wikipedia without a valid reason, which you should specify in the edit summary or on the article's talk page. Thank you. A link to the edit I have reverted can be found here: link. If you believe this edit should not have been reverted, please contact me. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 19:15, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

As I indicated in my Edit Summary, I was in the process of moving that material (which pertained to a different Kim Hill) to the article about her father, where it clearly belongs.--BillFlis 15:48, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Legionellosis/Legionella

In the Legionellosis article you recently inserted a note saying "This belongs in the legionella article, not here" This was in connection with a paragraph on "legionella-like amoebal pathogens" I don't disagree with your observation, but wonder why you did not simply move the text, or at least place the comment on the discussion page. Pzavon 16:58, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I left a comment there because that is what I thought was appropriate. I think you just left me a comment here because that is what you felt was appropriate. We're all volunteers here, aren't we? Are you saying I'm somehow obligated to do something?--BillFlis 00:50, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
I am wondering why you put the comment in so well hidden a location, where article readers would not see it, only those who happened to check a specific change history. I suppose I am relatively new to Wikipedia, but I've seen similar constructive comments placed much more offten in the Talk page where they can be more easily seen and responded to. I did not simply make the change myself because I was pressed for time, having looked at it during a short break at work. Pzavon 03:13, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Typo RegEx

Oops! Sorry about the "nonsense/ical" typo. I must have made a few hundred changes to that long list (all today!), so it figures I had to make at least one typo myself (hit "/0" instead of shift-")". Concerning your very long "flouride"-correcting RegEx, you know, you can leave off the "\b" (which indicates the "b"oundary of a word) on the front and back and save a lot of bother. I'd be bold and put just "([Ff])lour(i[nd][ae]|esce)" --> "$1luor$2" (with no "\b" at either end) and see if anybody complains.--BillFlis 23:27, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your helpful comment. However, I was considering the rule Always consider the possibility of false positives - don't add if there is one and although matching any word that has ([Ff])lour(i[nd][ae]|esce) in the middle is attractively simple, I can't help suspecting that there could be false positives from doing that - people's names, place names, songs, pop groups, all kinds of fiction - there are a lot of strange words out there that a non-terminated regex might match. I think I'll stick with my horrendously long regex since it does keep a boundary on the possible matches. Thanks all the same. - Euchiasmus 20:13, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More typo

Hi, a couple of problems have arisen form lines copied and adjusted, but the destination string being unchanged. In one case $2 no longer existed, and in another an new () had been introduced so that the $2 in the destination came from the middle of the word instead of the end (thus creating the new word "environmeno"!). Just thought I'd let you know. Regards, Rich Farmbrough 13:27 27 August 2006 (GMT).

I'm trying to be careful but that was a nasty one; I had ":?" instead of "?:", hard to pick up! Thanks for the alert.--BillFlis 13:33, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Removals from RETF list

Hey. Sorry I removed without asking; I just figured that it's better to err on the side of caution than keep words on the list that may trigger false positives. I'll wait for your response till I remove them again, and will move them to the talk page next time, but I still don't feel that removing things from the live list should require a discussion first and adding things (which can screw articles up) shouldn't. See what I'm saying? (BTW, greetings from Germantown! Heh.) --Galaxiaad 02:47, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Oh, in case it wasn't clear, the words I removed were suggested on User:Mboverload/RegExTypoFix#Misspellings to be removed/fixed. --Galaxiaad 02:49, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blocking IPs

Hi, I read your comment on the user page for User:204.108.200.16 which prompted me to respond. I'd like to offer the following observations:

  1. The IP has been blocked a number of times, as you can see here.
  2. When you encounter a user or IP that is persistently vandalising and has had the requisite warnings as advocated in the guidelines then you can request a block at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism.
  3. It is a shared IP of the "Great Valley School District", therefore I would recommend that you either remove or modify the hostile tone of the comment. Perhaps you can take the "positive contributions are welcomed" stance so that first time users will not be discouraged.

LittleOldMe 10:49, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Hostile? I don't know where you got that out of what I wrote. I had only hoped to be amusing. I thought that what other people wrote was much more threatening. In fact, they DID block this user, whereas I only expressed my dismay at not being able to do so.--BillFlis 12:11, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Frankford Yellow Jackets

Hi, Brian Harris here from the Historical Society of Frankford. I'm on Wikipedia as User:IanBlade. I would like to throw in a few edits on the Yellow Jackets entry but want to go through you first as it seems you started the entry. The history can be traced back to the 1899 Frankford Athletic Association and I would like to start entries on that. If there are an objections or if you wish to do it I can give you the information. Thanks

I noticed your comment about adding notable players to the Frankford Yellow Jackets article - you might enjoy reading about Hap Moran who, by the way, scored the first touchdown ever against the Philadelphia Eagles, October 15, 1933, on a pass from Harry Newman. [edit] Scrapple article

Apple butter? I never thought of that. I usually eat it with ketchup, unless I made it as a side for pancakes or French Toast, then it gets maple syrup. Might just have to try apple butter next time.  ;) •Jim62sch• 21:51, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

Why are you telling me? I've never put apple butter on scrapple--never even heard of the practice until I read the scrapple article here.--BillFlis 03:50, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wilt Chamberlain free throws

Do you know the source, or have any additional details, regarding the Bulls game you mention in the Wilt Chamberlain article? I'd like to find the full details, if I can, to use the info in a different article. Mwelch 23:12, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Rats! Thought I was onto something good. Thanks, anyway, though! Mwelch 02:05, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Proove (Typos)

Thanks for generalizing my proove -> prove addition to the spelling list. You seem a lot more familiar with the inner workings so I'm hoping you can help. I've generated a list of about 50 pages from Google that have at least one of the errors into AWB. But when I run against the spelling list, it isn't finding/fixing the errors even though I can find the errors in the file. Is this something wrong with my AWB or with the list? Thanks in advance. ~ BigrTex 16:22, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Exterminating Boasts

Hi, I had a suggestion and also was wondering if you could help me. Suggestion: as you have done so many edits to remove 'Boasts' it might be helpful to add a reason why you are exterminating them. Maybe on your talk or user page? or even in the edit summary by linking to a manual of style. Question: can you tell me how you found the articles you edited and changed them? was it a standard google search and then edit as normal or did you have some tools to help you? Thanks Rimmeraj 03:12, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

In almost every case, the usage of "boasts" was incorrect: "The train station boasts a 14-car parking lot." Is the station really proud to possess such a parking lot? "The village boasts a pub with exotic dancers." (I'm paraphrasing, but I really found something like that for a place in Australia, I think it was.) The ones I didn't change were instances when human beings, rather than inanimate objects, were really boasting (in the sense of bragging). I found them by using the search function over there on the left: type in "boasts", click "Search", no need for Google.--BillFlis 12:27, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
