- Spelling out the letters BLA (the first 3 letters in the word "Black") is a racist epithet and a truncated abbreviation identifying one as a Black/African-American, and is a slang way to say the word "Black". It is usually uttered or whispered by those of other races behind a Black person's back. This often happens when people of a non-Black race are driving through a turnpike or toll street guarded by Black people, when those in the car are nervous and try to alert or warn each other of this difference/"clash" by uttering this epithet; this happens while the windows are closed and at most only whispered if the windows are open or on the off-chance the car is stopped or searched.
