E. Gadd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

E. Gadd

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

E. Gadd, sometimes referred to as Dr. or Professor E. Gadd; known as "Professor Oyama" in Japan, is a fictional character who has made a number of appearances in different Mario games, each time appearing as a mad, but friendly, gadget-inventing scientist. His full name is Elvin Gadd. He is apparently left-handed, as shown in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time when he is shown operating a Nintendo DS with a stylus in his left hand.

In Japan the professor is named after Nintendo game designer Yoshiyuki Oyama.[1] The English name is a play on the minced oath egad! or egads! His speech pattern consists of specialised gibberish, but the translation (or his "real words") are always in a text box.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

E. Gadd debuted in Luigi's Mansion as one of the main characters. Luigi enters the mansion and is saved from ghosts by a strange old man wielding a vacuum cleaner. Professor E. Gadd reveals that he lives in a house near the mansion, where he researches his favorite subject - ghosts. Luigi explains his brother Mario is missing within the house, and the professor decides to help Luigi by giving him two of his inventions, the Poltergust 3000 and the Game Boy Horror, the professor continues to help Luigi throughout the game, giving him help and tips.

In Super Mario Sunshine, when Mario finds FLUDD, it says: "Thank you for purchasing this item from Gadd Science, Inc." Later, Bowser Jr. says he got his magic brush from "a strange old man in a white coat". This is a fitting description of Professor E. Gadd, which is further confirmed when FLUDD seems to react in surprise to the statement. There is a symbol both on the Magic Paintbrush and FLUDD and its upgrade boxes showing a face and hairstyle similar to E. Gadd's, probably the Gadd Science, Inc. insignia.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga the professor makes an appearance supplying the brothers with an array of accessories to help them along their way, after they try each drink at Starbeans Cafe, a coffeehouse that he owns.

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time the professor debuts his newest invention to the Mushroom Kingdom, a time machine. However, when Princess Peach ends up stuck in the past, E. Gadd provides the brothers a suitcase enhanced with artificial intelligence named Stuffwell to help them on their quest. The heroes later meet a younger Prof. E. Gadd (thought by the Toads there, in the English version, to be named interjection-like names, such a U. Reeka & Yao Zerr), who is researching the behavior of the Thwomps at Thwomp Volcano. After his lab is destroyed by the eruption of the volcano he mentions his interests in studying ghosts, and that he would be buying a lab at the edge of Boo Woods, which is the likely location of Luigi's Mansion.

In Mario Party Advance, the player can use the coins earned in the mini-games to buy Professor E. Gadd's zany "Gaddgets". In Mario Party 6 Professor E. Gadd appears in his own board, E Gadd's Garage. Players see him when they land on a ? space and usually get to try one of his inventions, like a giant fan that sucks the other players coins away.

In Mario Party 7, many character gadgets are made by Professor E. Gadd, including Wario and Waluigi's Coin Vacuum.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Inventions of Gadd Science, Inc.

The following is a brief list of some of E. Gadd's inventions that have appeared.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Poltergust 3000

A modified vacuum cleaner designed to suck up and entrap ghosts. It also has a "blow" function which allows it to expel elements it sucks up such as fire, water, and ice. Luigi uses this in Luigi's Mansion to defend himself from the many ghosts; it also makes a return in Mario Power Tennis where Luigi uses it as his defensive Power move, as he throws his racket and uses the Poltergust 3000 to retrieve it, so when the racket comes flying back, it runs into the ball. Wario and Waluigi seem to use a modified version in Mario Party 7. The Coin Vacuum can steal 1, 3, 5, or 10 coins from your opponents. In Japan, this invention as known as the "Obakyuumu", which can romanized as "obacuum" (a pun on "obake", and vacuum).

[edit] Super Poltergust 3001

An advanced version of a Poltergust 3000. It has the same functions as the Poltergust 3000, but is much larger because it can be ridden on. When ridden, it hovers over the ground. It can move at high speeds. E. Gadd uses it briefly in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

[edit] Poltergust 4000

One of the vehicles used by Luigi in Mario Kart DS to race in. It is similar to the Super Poltergust 3001, though it does not float. The "barrel" of the car is the area Luigi sits on, and the nozzle is on the ground. Emblems are placed on both sides of the barrel.

[edit] Game Boy Horror

A portable device (that is reminiscent of the Game Boy Color) containing a built-in camera which E. Gadd can watch the action from the safety of his lab and contact Luigi. It also stores data, including a map and anything Luigi has collected, and contains a special radar called the Boo Radar to find hidden Boos. The Boo Radar will sometimes mistake round balls with a Boos face on it, or bombs for Boos.

[edit] Game Boy Horror SP

The upgraded version of the Game Boy Horror, given to Mario by E. Gadd in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. It is another portable device (this time being reminiscent of a Game Boy Advance SP). It makes items rarely dropped by enemies always be dropped by enemies. Originally going to be merely the Game Boy Horror.

[edit] Ghost Portrificationizer

A large machine which works in conjunction with the Poltergust 3000, certain ghosts captured can be entrapped in portraits to be hung in E. Gadd's gallery. The machine also works in reverse, which was utilized to free Mario from the painting he had been trapped in by King Boo.

[edit] FLUDD

The Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, or FLUDD (known as "Ponpu" in Japan), is a water-spraying backpack used by Mario in Super Mario Sunshine. It has various nozzle attachments which can be collected by breaking open boxes with E. Gadd's logo on the front. These nozzles allowed Mario to spray water, hover, blast off into the air, and move forward at a great speed, propelled by an explosion of water. FLUDD also has notable artificial intelligence and the ability to communicate with a voice. In certain ways, FLUDD functions much as Navi did in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

[edit] Magic Brush

This is used by Bowser Jr. (as Shadow Mario) in Super Mario Sunshine. It is a large paint brush with the ability to paint various colors, create enemies, and make the wishes of the one who paints with it come true. It is unclear why the brush was made as well as why it was given to Bowser Jr., though some fans claim he stole it or E. Gadd was tricked by Bowser Jr. using his Mario costume. In Mario Power Tennis and in Mario Hoops 3 on 3 Bowser Jr. uses his Magic Brush to perform special moves.

[edit] Time Machine

Used by Princess Peach to visit the past at the beginning of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It is powered by the Cobalt Star.

[edit] Stuffwell

An intelligent suitcase used by the Mario Brothers on their quest in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Its purpose is to manage the brothers' inventory and display their current status. It also helps the brothers by activating the Shroob Saucers that they use in the game, and eventually near the end develops the ability to return to the past before they rescue Princess Peach. It is known to speak English and tends to make words more complicated than they really are, (such as frequent shoutings of the word "TRAVESTY") and upon ending its speeches, it says "BACK TO ADVENTURE!"

[edit] Starbeans Café

The café in the Beanbean Kingdom, made by E. Gadd. Strangely enough, it does not have any toilets. At one point, E. Gadd puts up a larger-than-life-size portrait. Every time Mario and Luigi mix a new drink, E. Gadd visits. (One time, he takes his Poltergust 3001 out for a test while there. The next time, he has to use the bathroom, to which Luigi sucks him up in the Poltergust 3001 so E. Gadd can relieve himself) Probably a spoof on the internationally-acclaimed Starbucks line of coffeeshops.

[edit] Ghost Suit

A pale blue jacket that, when worn, turns characters into a ghost. When E. Gadd wears this in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, Luigi gets scared and vacuums him.

[edit] The Gaddlight

A flashlight that is used to scare away Boos when they try to steal a Star or coins in Mario Party 4.

[edit] Hydrogush 4000

A large water pump used in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It's not portable like the FLUDD (at least, not as portable), but it does have a lot of power. Paradoxically, he created it in the present after seeing Baby Mario squirting water in the past, to douse the erupting Thwomp Volcano.

[edit] DS Time Radar

A handheld device (that is inspired by a Nintendo DS) used briefly by E. Gadd to find Princess Peach in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It has the ability to pinpoint which time period someone is trapped in. One of the Toads, who is worried about Princess Peach, thinks he just made it up. Also, when Professor E. Gadd turns on his Hydrogush 4000, he uses a DS-like device again.

[edit] E. Gadd battle machine parts

Special parts that can be bought in the Super Duel Mode of Mario Party 5. They include the E. Gadd body, E. Gadd Jet, E. Gadd Engine and E. Gadd gun.

[edit] Coin Vacuum

A vacuum from Mario Party 7. It is a capsule item exclusive to Wario and Waluigi. It doesn't look much like the Poltergust 3000. Rather, it is yellow and purple (much like the two characters that use it), and features the E. Gadd logo. It is used to steal coins from other players. Similar to Wario's ability in Wario World, where he used his mouth as a giant vacuum to inhale coins.

[edit] Surprise Wand

A magic wand from Mario Party 7. It is an orb that Dry Bones and Boo use. When used, it doubles the number they roll for two turns and makes them impervious to traps. It has the E. Gadd logo on part of it.

[edit] E. Gadd's Garage

E. Gadd's garage is the garage he had in Mario Party 6. He also keeps his inventions there and has more inventions there that are not listed here. It also appears as a Rare Mini-Game called "Lab-Brats".

Spoilers end here.
