Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (クライシス コア -ファイナルファンタジーVII- Kuraishisu Koa -Fainaru Fantajī Sebun-?) is an action role-playing game being developed by Square Enix for the PlayStation Portable. The game is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII and is also the fourth entry to the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series, which also includes the games Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, as well as the CGI movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children and the anime, Last Order: Final Fantasy VII. Production is being overseen by Yoshinori Kitase, the director of the original Final Fantasy VII, with Hajime Tabata serving as director and Tetsuya Nomura being responsible for character designs.

Very little information about the game has been released of now except that it will be on the PSP. It seems that the game will mainly focus around Zack, a 1st Class SOLDIER and Cloud Strife while he is a lowly Shinra Guard. Another character also present in the game is Aerith Gainsborough as her voice is heard in the trailer of the game. This game appears to take place around the events of Nibelheim outlined in Last Order: Final Fantasy VII.

The game's old tagline: "A story of three young men and one young woman bound for destiny's core."

The game's new tagline: "Men who shed tears for their own fate, and for their friends." [1]

[edit] Plot overview

Thanks to their monopoly on mako energy and a strong military force, the Shin-Ra Company is quickly exerting their influence around the World. Construction is also rapidly advancing on their base, and symbol of prosperity, the mako city of Midgar, which will soon become Shinra's seat of power.

The Shinra Company possesses an organization of soldiers with powerful combat ability known as SOLDIER, and amongst them, the especially excellent SOLDIERs are known as SOLDIER: First Class, inspiring respect and envy from the masses. One of the young people yearning to be First Class is Zack. He works hard at his daily duties with his senior, Angeal, a First Class and an excellent leader.

At that time, the SOLDIER Mass Disappearance Incident occurred when, during combat operations in Wutai, Genesis, a first class member of SOLDIER, went missing without a trace along with many other SOLDIERs. The Shinra Company's top management assessed the situation and decided to send out SOLDIER in order to bring an end to the war and clarify the scandal, and so, Angeal and Zack, as well as Sephiroth, whose name would come to be known through the world as a hero, were dispatched to Wutai.

What is the truth behind Genesis' disappearance? What is the secret concealed by the three SOLDIERs dispatched to Wutai? A struggle of cruel fate awaits Zack.

[edit] Battle system

Digital Mind Wave

Crisis Core has action and menu-based elements. The new battle system is known as Digital Mind Wave, or DMW, and revolves around a series of reels at the upper left corner of the of the screen which spin continuously as long as there is SP left to consume. Each rotate independently and upon lining up the three reels of the same character and value, a power-up or a "Power Surge!" will be rewarded to Zack.

The player will have full control over Zack when moving around, and can rotate the camera with the left and right triggers. Every now and then, a random encounter battle will occur. The battle takes place on the same screen as regular movement, with no transition or loading.

Battles consist of multiple enemies on screen at once. To attack enemies, the command bar must be set to attack. Spells like Fire, Blizzard, Cure and their higher level counterparts are also located on the command bar and used in the same fashion as previous titles in the series, although they deplete magic points with each use. The game automatically targets the closest enemy, and changes the target automatically as you move around. A quick roll maneuver and triangle to block incoming attacks can also be performed. [1][2]

Zack, in conversation with Lazard

  • Angeal Hewley: A SOLDIER who is the mentor to members in SOLDIER. Angeal also gives guidance in techniques and doctrines to fellow SOLDIERs. Angeal's troubles and ties seem to be a vital element to the story of this game. The previous wielder of the Buster Sword which Cloud inherited from Zack, Angeal does not like using the Buster Sword, claiming that he believes it would be "a waste". His friendship with Zack is the core of story. The two develop a strong relationship of trust when Angeal, who would normally never use the Buster Sword, wields it to defend Zack. In the new trailer, it appears he does not go on the mission to find Genesis with Zack and Sephiroth leading Sephiroth to question his loyalty. Angeal bears a white right wing on his back which seems to cause him some uneasiness as he considers it the trait of a monster. Whether or not these wings connect him with either Sephiroth or Genesis is not known. Angeal's design seems to be based on Tetsuya Nomura's original design for Cloud Strife. Angeal's surname is derived from the Greek word hyle which is translated as materia in Latin.
  • Genesis: A mysterious 1st Class SOLDIER who rebelled against Shinra and went missing during the Wutai war. He has connections to both Sephiroth and Angeal, his childhood friends, and was the subject of Project G (Project Genesis), the forerunner of the Jenova Project. Following the events of Crisis Core, nearly all official records of Genesis are erased, leaving behind little more than the first letter of his name and a cryptic connection to the secret organization known as Deep Ground in Dirge of Cerberus.
  • Lazard: The head executive of the Department of SOLDIER of Shin-Ra. Lazard is a clear-headed man who holds another important position within Shin-Ra. He seems to have two sides, depending on if he's working or not. Not much is known about Lazard but Nomura has pointed out that his role is vital to the story.

[edit] Trivia

  • The first trailer was clips from the OVA Last Order: Final Fantasy VII.
  • As shown in an image (see the image section), there is the possibility that Angeal is the original owner of the Buster Sword.
  • Angeal's design was originally going to be the main character design but instead replaced it with Cloud's design.
  • In an interview for Famitsu Tetsuya Nomura has stated that a playable demo of the game would be ready by the end of 2006. However, there was no mention of whether the demo would be openly available to PSP owners.[4] However, a playable demo was available at Jump Festa '06.[5]
