[edit] Political career
Madison was elected in 1816. He was too ill to travel to Frankfort for his inauguration, and so was sworn in by a justice of the peace in Bourbon County, Kentucky, on September 5, 1816. He died 6 weeks later, the first Kentucky governor to die in office.
