Germany's Next Topmodel is a German reality television show which pits contestants against each other in a variety of competitions to determine who will win a modeling contract with IMG. Supermodel Heidi Klum hosts the show, which is based on the top-rating series America's Next Top Model created and co-produced by supermodel Tyra Banks.
The debut season of the show premiered on the Pro Sieben network in 2006. The first episode documented the selection of the 12 final contestants, who were later placed in a Düsseldorf apartment for the duration of the competition. Spanning a wide variety of women of various races, heights and body sizes, the 12 final girls had been whittled down from a pool of thousands to compete against one another in various contests designed to simulate the extreme demands placed on professional models. Each week, contestants were evaluated on their performance and faced possible elimination through a panel of judges: Klum herself, hair and make-up artist Armin Morbach, choreographer and runway coach Bruce Darnell and model agent Peyman Amin. Guest judges included male supermodel Marcus Schenkenberg, designer Jette Joop, actor Erol Sander and body painter Joanne Gair.
Klum also hosts the American show Project Runway, which is known as the rival to America's Next Top Model.
The winning girl Lena Gercke got the contract with IMG and was on the cover of the German Cosmopolitan. The other two finalists also received a contract with IMG.
On March 12, 2006 a second season was announced in fall 2006. The second season actually started March 1, 2007.
