Hinako Shijou is a character in the King of Fighters series.
[edit] History
Hinako was a junior high school girl who preferred to spend her free time practicing a sport at school. Among the most popular female sports were: volleyball, gymnastics, and softball. Hinako, a passionate young woman with lots of incredible dreams, was a different case. She has decided to practice a traditional Japanese sport, only practiced by large, heavy men: Sumo.
After Hinako first joined a prestigious ladies-only school, the expected pressure for such institutions instantly fell upon her. Not only was she demanded good grades and exceptional behavior, she also had to be the first in her class in any sport. She was offered many different sports, but none of them raised Hinako's attention. That is, until she visisted a Sumo arena.
Once she saw a Sumo match, Hinako's world turned around completely. Sumo was an art in itself, much more than any other martial art. She realized that Sumo should not only be practiced by enormous men, but also normal women could be able to exceed themselves in the practice of this art. Hinako decided she would restore the grace and beauty that Sumo is supposed to represent.
Back in her school, Hinako wanted to form a Sumo club, but everybody just laughed at her, and deemed her as a crazy brat. Sumo was just out of the question for the refined and delicate ladies of her school. Hinako didn't bother to hear any reasons, as her mind was already decided. Everyday she practiced the arts of Sumo, and instead of gaining weight and increasing her rather small girth, she decided to train her arms and legs to be able to support the weight of any huge Sumo wrestler. After all, it wasn't the size that counted, but the refinement of the technique that mattered.
After a long period of training, Hinako decided to prove her worth as a Sumo wrestler. After trying (and failing) to convince her school's superiors to show her fellow students the beauty of Sumo, she decided to go to an audition, and defeated Yuri Sakazaki. Mai Shiranui, Kasumi Todoh and Yuri Sakazaki considered Hinako worthy enough to join their team and participate in the King of Fighters 2000 tournament. [1] Hinako also participated on the same team in the King of Fighters 2001, but with Li Xiangfei replacing Yuri Sakazaki, who left for the Art of Fighting team to comfort Robert Garcia. [2]
[edit] Trivia
- In the King of Fighters : Maximum Impact 2, one of Lilly Kane's extra outfits (outfit G) is based on Hinako Shijou.
- Ironically enough, Lilly is Hinako's alternate striker in KoF 2000.
- Hinako can be seen in the background of a certain KOFXI stage standing near Leona.
- During Hinako's KOF 2003 appearance, she possessed a technique which parodied fellow videogame sumo-wrestler E.Honda of the Street Fighter series. She attempts his famed Sumo Head-butt attack, but ends up falling flat on her face.
