Interstate 676 (abbreviated I-676) is an interstate highway that serves as a major thoroughfare through Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where it is known as the Vine Street Expressway, and Camden, New Jersey, where it is known as the northern segment of the North-South Freeway, as well as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Highway. Its northwestern terminus is at Interstate 76 in Philadelphia near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, heading east towards the Ben Franklin Bridge. On the east (New Jersey) side of the bridge, the highway heads south to its southeastern terminus at Interstate 76 in Gloucester City, New Jersey near the Walt Whitman Bridge.
I-676 traffic between the Vine Street Expressway and the Ben Franklin Bridge is directed through a brief at-grade portion along city streets, a rare example of a non-limited access section of Interstate highway. This arrangement was chosen due to concerns that building onramps to the Ben Franklin Bridge would have effectively destroyed Franklin Square (Philadelphia), a historically sensitive site. The Vine Street Expressway itself continues unsigned for a short distance to its terminus at Interstate 95.
What is now I-676 was originally designated as Interstate 80S, renumbered to Interstate 76 in 1964; what is now I-76 between both ends was designated Interstate 680, renumbered to I-676 after the renumbering of I-80S. In 1973, the routings of I-76 and I-676 were switched with each other, due to delays in building the Vine Street Expressway.[2]
