[edit] The Troubles
As one of the main road links, as well as a border and customs post, at the border to the Republic of Ireland, Killeen was the site of a number of serious incidents during the Troubles. For more information see The Troubles in Killeen, which includes a list of incidents in Killeen during the Troubles resulting in two or more fatalities.
The area of Killeen is known to locals by the spelling 'Killean'. This was the original spelling before the widespread anglicisation of Irish settlement names.
