[edit] Obit letter from the Sun for resource use
The following was a Letter to the Editor in the Vancouver Sun; I'm sorry the clipping doesn't have the date-stamp on it but this was a few days after Mart Kenney's death:
- Mart Kenney, who died earlier this month in Mission, age 95, was Canada's one and only national big band leader. Mart's big band dance music and style always conjured warm and beautiful memories for his myriad fans across Canada. His many tours across our country to small-town Canada during the Dirty 30s, his many musical contributions to the Second World War effort, his numerous post-war peformances and his active affairs in his community, province and country were outstanding.
Mart received 11 awards in recdgnition of his contributions to our country. Among them were the Queen's Jubilee Medal, the Order of Canad, the National Canadian Musicians' Association Award and the Order of B.C. Mart's talent as a bandleader provided countless hours of employment for professional musicians all across Canada. His business and moral ethics were beyond reproach and earned him the utmost respect freom his peers.
Mart was a faithful and loyal member of the Vancouver Musicians' Association for 77 ears. Mart and his music are gone but not forgotten by his six generations of fans and his fellow musicians. Mart was everone's favourite, simply the best.
- --R.A. (Bobby) Hales, President Local 145, Vancouver Musicians' Association
A more detailed obit can likel be found via the Fraser Valley Record's archives, or in the Mission Archives, and/or also from the District of Mission's files, as he was a long-standing municipal councillor and they may have a memorial on him available ("a memorial" in the old sense, i.e. a pamphlet/press release); both should also have bio/obit materials on his wife Norma Locke-Kenney, who also deserves an article.Skookum1 01:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC) Postscript: Bobby Hales deserves an article, too.Skookum1 01:43, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
