[edit] History
The airline was established on 16 January 1994 and started operations on 23 June 1994 flying from Skopje to Zürich using a Boeing 737-200. Until 2000, Jat Airways - the national airlines of Serbia was in charge of the airlines maintenance, aircrafts, root planning and provided pilots, cabin crew and 2 Boeing 737-300 aircraft to MAT. Jat Airways sold it's stake in the airline on the verge of the new millennium and relationship between the two became cold in 2005 when the Serbian airline grounded one of its leased out aircrafts to MAT at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport claiming that MAT owed millions for the two B737's. The airline returned both to Jat Airways after the accusations.
The loss of its two key aircrafts in summer 2005 caused head aches to the management as the airline had no fleet for the peak summer season. Instead it relayed on small regional aircrafts it leased from multiple Balkan based airlines on short term periods. It finally bought its own aircraft in April 2006.
MAT is now owned by Zivko Gruevski (48.43%) and Zlatko Petrovski (48.43%) (at January 2005). The Government of Republic of Macedonia in the year of 2000 signed an agreement with MAT that gave MAT the status of National flag carrier of Republic of Macedonia in the following 10 years. The management team from MAT has brought in experts from Slovenia to help the airline with new aircraft orders and airline restructuring.

[edit] Embraer-MAT dispute
