Menora is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Stirling. Its post code is 6050. It is known for its tree-lined streets, parks and heritage homes. It is close to the edgy coffee strip of Mount Lawley.
The town, which has strong ties to the Jewish community, takes its name from the Hanukkah Menorah, the nine-branched candlestick considered the symbol of good. The original Menorah in the Tabernacle and Temple in Jerusalem, had seven branches. Menora is home to Perth's oldest and largest synagogue, the Perth Hebrew Congregation.
The Menora Kosher Delicatessen offers many traditional kosher goods. The suburb lies at the heart of Perth's small Jewish community. Although this is the third largest Jewish community in Australia, numbers have never reached more than 6000 members. Despite a small but steady stream of Jewish immigration from South Africa, the Jewish community in Menora and surrounding suburbs is shrinking as many young people leave Perth, mainly heading to the larger Australian Jewish communities in Melbourne and Sydney.
The exclusive Alexander Park Tennis Club hosts, amongst other things, the Western Australian Tennis Championships. In the 2001 census, Menora had a median age of 45, and 37% of its population were over 60 years of age.
