Mikrogeophagus is a neotropical cichlid genus. The genus Mikrogeophagus includes only two species. M. ramirezi and M. altispinosa. Both species spawn on flat rocks or leaves and not in caves like fishes from the closely related cichlid genus Apistogramma.
Fishes from this genus are sometimes recorded as Papiliochromis or Microgeophagus though these genera should be regarded as a junior synonyms. (Kullander, 2003)
