MTS Allstream

MTS Allstream (trading symbol: (TSX: MBT)) is a Canadian telecommunications company which provides Internet services primarily to the business market. It is a subsidiary of Manitoba Telecom Services Inc.
The company was the result of a 1999 merger between AT&T Canada Long Distance Services, MetroNet Communications, NetCom Canada and ACC TelEnterprises. From 1999 to 2003 It was known as AT&T Canada Inc. From 2003 to 2004 it was known as Allstream Inc., and finally in 2004 it was renamed MTS Allstream Inc. AT&T Canada was originally known as Unitel Communications Co.
Unitel made the application in 1990 to the CRTC that opened the Canadian telephone market to long distance competition in 1992, a successful application that superseded the attempt by its predecessor CNCP Telecommunications in 1983. Unitel was formed by CNCP Telecommunications. CNCP was formed by a joint venture of CN Telegraphs and CP Telegraphs when the telegraph and telex businesses went into decline and a joint venture would make it more profitable than each company going it alone. The two companies were established by their respective national railway companies. The telegraph service in Canada is now operated by Telegrams Canada.
Through the MTS division, the company provides local exchange services in Manitoba.
